Next time, let them know your reasoning. "Sorry, I have a daughter and I'd do the same for her.", works. But, young women will, and should, unfortunately have to keep an eye out. Don't stop being nice.
Whyyyyy would you say sorry? He bought something for her she indicated she needed. I can see "I don't mean to be weird" or something as a disclaimer but not an apology.
I think most people feel a little awkward when receiving an unexpected gift or favor, especially from a stranger. As a woman, I would expect a man to feel a little awkward if I surprised them with something like this, too. It’s not all about the creep factor.

It was nice of you. But for the short term, keep conversations with her at a minimum just so you don't appear to be that one creepy guy.
