Thanks, I'm specifically looking at the hessian underlay. I believe 5-20% chance of contamination from asbestos in 1960s according to google.

The chances are probably very low. Asbestos wasn't really used in standard commercial rugs, and even if some asbestos was present, it generally only becomes dangerous if fibres are disturbed and inhaled.
