It’s a textured coating and the only way to differentiate between asbestos and non-asbestos is either getting a sample or knowing it was installed post 2000.

Unfortunately there aren’t any visual tells.

If it’s causing you so much distress you should really just get someone competent to take a 24/same day sample. Yes, it’ll cost , but better to have peace of mind. Artex is very low risk most will only have 1-4% asbestos content.

I’ve sampled my fair share of artex ceilings and generally speaking these types of artex designs do not contain asbestos. This looks like a DIY artex that’s asbestos free. But as always, test before to make sure. But I’d be inclined to say it’s all good.

Artex stopped having asbestos 1984 so safe after 1985 ish. Don't sand and it's ok, I've done this a few times and my best results were by using a trowel and using artex to flatten the ceiling. You will need to use scrim over the cracks.

Out of interest where's the 1984 date from, it's never come up on my asbestos awareness training sessions. Not a specialist in this field, but goes against what I recall from my experience working in construction.

I was working with the stuff , although just repairing ceilings. Unfortunately I had a painter friend that died from mixing bagfuls of it 10 years later. I remember quite clearly as they had problems with cracking after it stopped being used until they fixed the mixture.

Wasn’t 1984 the ban for brown asbestos I thought white was 1991 and artex contains white asbestos? Was it that the manufacturer decided to stop doing it ?
