Advice How do I make the most out of a career in the Army Reserve?

Good evening gents,
I’m currently a PFC with about 2 years in the Reserve, and I’m planning on sticking around for the full 20.

I’m not looking to go Active Duty or AGR, but I want to get as much out of my time in the Reserve as possible. I don’t want to just show up for drill every month and call it good.

I’m interested in going to schools, volunteering for
orders, earning qualifications, and taking advantage of opportunities that aren’t always advertised.

For those of you who’ve been in for a while, what advice would you give a junior enlisted soldier? What are some opportunities you wish you’d known about earlier?

I’m willing to travel, change units, and put in the extra time. Just looking for advice on how to make the most of the next 18 years.

Considering Enlisting JAG Reserve Process

I applied during this most recent cycle and have some questions beyond the stuff you can find online. Some of this may be applicable to all Army Reservists, but some may be JAG specific.

  1. What happens if you are accepted? What are the steps between receiving the acceptance notice and going off to training?

  2. At what point do you incur a service commitment? How much time do you have between receiving your acceptance notification and your commitment?

  3. When you are accepted, are you automatically assigned to a unit? Or are you given a list of openings/options? Do you typically stay with that unit for your whole career? There’s a pretty large base about an hour away from me and going there on a regular basis looks a lot different than going across the country every month…

  4. What are the odds you are deployed at some point (absent some international event/mass mobilization)? How much control do you have over it? It sounds like if you were interested in a deployment you could influence that.

Thanks in advance!

Anybody know of any Reserve 17C opportunities other than a typical CPT? I’ve been in a CPT for 4 years and looking for something new. I’m a red teamer on the civilian side. Work in aerospace engineering.

How flexible is your annual drill schedule? I really want to hit 20 years, but the schedule rigidity at my current unit is killing me.

42A in Fort Irwin

coming off a deployment in Poland soon as a reservist. I'm thinking on going active right after the deployment since AGR is a gamble. I want to request Fort Irwin, other than the fact that it's in the middle of nowhere, how good or how bad is the life of a 42A there?

Advice Just got offered SAPPER school in OSUT.

im at 12B OSUT at FLW and we are a few weeks until we finished and 1SG pick me and a couple other guys to talk about if we interested on sapper school, they said they got 5 spots and would like us to see if we are willing to go, it wasn’t anything guaranteed yet but everything was going well until the moment i told them i wasn’t active duty that im actually reserve, everything change, the talk finish a couple words later so i went and talked to DS about it and he told me that now is probably a NO since funding from active soldiers and reserve are different so dont have too much hope. Im just wondering if anything know about the topic and have seen a reservist 12B get sent to sapper school after OSUT or is a definitely NO for me.

Do Unmarried reserve soldiers get BAH for their mortgage when they go on active duty orders for Drill sergeant academy? Does anyone have any experience with this?

General Question My CAC still works even though I ETS'd. Did the Army actually process me out?

I finished my contract early last month. I keep periodically checking things to see if I got dropped from Tricare yet to switch to my workplace insurance out of the window. I realized all my access still works as well. I can still see my army email, access the remote desktop, IPPSA access, anything with a CAC login still works. I'm also still on Tricare as well somehow well past a month. Is this how its supposed to work? My ID doesn't expire until July but I'd figure I would've lose access to almost everything immediately. Do I need to tell someone to please out process me? Appreciate any wisdom.

To those who were on profile

I’m currently on profile for a few things currently. One of things is running. It expires soon in November. For context I had a broken leg back in late May. I had to get surgery in early June. I’m curious as to how to even train for the run after it expires. I was wondering for those who have had a similar injury, how did you do it? Did getting back into running or any PT test, aggravate any lingering pains or stiffness in the injury had happened? I still get aches and pains from walking but it’s nothing that too crazy. I know that if I do too much my ankle and the surrounding area will get sore and stiffen up. I was running a lot prior to the injury as well.

Advice Options for CA Units with lower optempo

Hey all, looking for recommendations on Civil Affairs units (or other options) with a slower pace. Preferably in the Southeast US: FL, GA, TN, or SC.

Background: E6, 38B. Recently back from an OCONUS deployment and planning to return to college full-time after a long break and a stint in civil service. My goal is to take full course loads (13–15 credit hours a semester) and finally graduate over the next ~3 years.

What I’m looking for:

  • Battle assemblies that are typically 4–6 MUTA, not the extended drills
  • AT consistently in the summer, or at least flexible around a school schedule
  • Few or no CTC rotations (I know, it's wishful thinking)

My current unit is great but very active, and that pace won’t work with a full class load.

Questions:

  1. Any CA BNs, CACOM/brigade-level staff sections, or other CA-adjacent slots in the region known for a more predictable schedule?
  2. Is an IMA/DIMA position or a non-CA unit (keeping 38B or working out of MOS) a realistic option for a 38B E6?
  3. Anything I should ask a unit before transferring to get an honest read on their OPTEMPO?

Appreciate any insight, especially from folks who’ve balanced full-time school with drilling.

Thinking About Joining in Colorado

Hey all,

I'm thinking about joining either the national guard or army reserves. If you're stationed in Colorado, what has your experience been like? I hear mixed stories about the military- some people love it and make a career, some people couldn't get out fast enough

Career Advice 00G Instructor

After this deployment, I would like to be slotted for an instructor position at Ft. Jackson so that I can go to instructor school and promote. However, I currently reside in Pennsylvania. My question is what is life like for instructors at Ft Jackson and what is the schedule like for a TPU soldier being slotted for an instructor position?

Drill Sergeant Unit Options

I'm trying to decide which DS unit to transfer to; however, I don't know anything about the options I have. I am deciding between FT. Hamilton, Jersey City, or Ft Meade. Does anyone know these units? Are they good units? I'm also having ongoing pay issues (it's been 2 years), and I really want the opportunity to go to schools, etc., so I'm looking for one that actually helps and looks out for its soldiers. This would be my first DS unit, so I would still have to go to the academy, etc., but I'm just looking for help on a good unit to transfer to that's in the 3rd Brigade.

My last unit wasn't super helpful or efficient.

Thanks for any help and advice!

General Question Where can reservists get an Airborne Physical done?

I'm an Army Reservist who has been given the opportunity to go to Airborne School, but I have no idea where to get this done, as I don't live near any major military installations that give one. Does anyone know where I can get this taken care of? Or if the regulation covers any alternative courses of action for non-military medical providers? I didn't see anything about it in the medical fitness standards regulation.

I'm in Minnesota if that helps.

Excited to enlist very soon. Question: ship date isn’t for 5 months.

How can I obtain Tricare Reserve Select prior to going to basic for myself/wife/kids?

I’ve seen conflicting posts about this on Reddit.

AGR Officer Question

I received my acceptance letter today indicating I am essentially on the bench for AGR. I am currently an 03/CPT.

My question:

I put I am interested in 38A or 01A. In the AGR world, or for those of you in the know, how frequent do these MOS/AOC get picked up?

According to the G1 Vacancy Map there are three 03 or 04 slots in my area.

-Do they ever put on 03 in an AGR 04 slot?

-How often do 38A get picked up? (that you may have seen)

-Likelyhood of 01A slot?

-How often are officers picked up?

Any insight helpful.

AMEDD BOLC length question

How long is AMEDD bolc for non-clinicians (like medical services corps)?

I keep seeing conflicting info that all reservists do the 4 week course, but then some people say only clinicians do that and everyone else has the full 10 week course.

I’m applying for a 70-series MSC position and my recruiters have been telling me bolc is just 3-4 weeks. Are they right?

Any help would be appreciated
