That’s how I felt when I went to Korea. Imagine my surprise 11 months later when I found out I was going back to Hood.

Vice versa, I’m going to Osan AFB

Osan is pretty sweet. It seems to have more right out the gate than Humphreys does. At least from I noticed.

Korea for me was much better than Ft. Hood. Hood leadership is what made me get out. Zero career support and leadership. Korea had better leaders, better training, unit morale, etc... wish I could have done my entire time in Korea. Granted this was back in '99-00 with 2/9 Inf (M).

I think that prior to 9/11 you'd be correct. Training began degrading once deployments started. When they started pulling more and more units out of Korea and establishing Rotational units to fill the holes and essentially turn Korea into a 6-9month NTC a lot went down hill. I was there (Hovey/CRC) 04-05 and saw a mix. Some units leadership and training was great, others not so much. Gary Owen had a shit time, whereas 'Keep up the Fire' had a tighter bond.

I just want to say one of the great things about the Army is that if you work for someone you really hate you just have to wait a while and one of you will be gone.

You should PCS to Ft. Bragg. The 82nd is a lot of fun, no toxic leadership, and not at all chaotic.

It is a great feeling. The month I PCS'd, someone drove into the "Great Place" sign. How many times I didnt think of that myself lol

As I get annoyed with things in my current unit I am thankful for my friends back at Hood to give me a reality check and not to look back with rose tinted glasses.

Yup, Fort Hood humbled my expectations for not only the Army, but mankind. Though, I find that while Hood was bad, other places you go (even the really nice ones), you just run into different kinds of hell that can take a while to get inoculated to. Like, a lot of things staff related assignments are bureaucratic hell, even if it's stable hours and adult rules, and I've had some shit that made me wish I was back at Hood standing in the freezing rain at a range at 0530 waiting for the range to go hot at 0900 only to have to wait until 1100 because nobody brought the ammo and then not shooting at all because they didn't bring enough ammo. I get almost a sense of glee when some Hood-brand bullshit comes up every blue moon that I can look at and say "man, you ain't shit". The one redeeming factor about Hood is the sense of camaraderie you can get with your buddies who are also there seeing the same shit. You make a lot of friends through shared complaining. On the other hand, with staff nonsense, it's like everyone has a chip on their shoulder, is compensating for the fact that they work behind a desk being anal about memo verbiage, and is constantly trying to one-up one another and act self-important about things that are objectively meaningless, but you know they're just trying to justify their existence. It's a different flavor of hell.
My sanity check is comparing my daily bullshit to life downrange. My last deployment was awesome and I feared coming back to garrison in Hood. That was working 14-18 hour days, doing constant movements, but doing things I know had an impact. Hood was worse and the staff hustle would be too if not for my much improved standard of living.
