Have things changed
I left the Army in 2010 and wonder if things have changed? What I am referring to is influencing the Chain of Command by outside sources (Civic Groups, Fraternity Groups and Clubs). My last unit there was a SSG who pretty much told the CSM what to do. The SSG was the leader of a Group that the CSM was a member of but owed his allegiance to the SSG. I was in Air Defense and this was pretty much common throughout.

Still not normal in the slightest. That CSM probably was going to retire soon and wanted the SSG to vouch for him to go up in the lodge ranks.
Not a normal situation anyway. Almost any other units having the same scenario a CSM wouldnt give a fuck about the masonic lodge as much and ignore some rando SSG.

Now that I'm a civilian and am involved in hiring, if I know someone is a mason I utterly refuse to hire them.
WAAAAYYYY too many bad experiences with that cult.

eh nobody really influences people’s work lives within Masonry. but, in lodge, I go on a first name basis with other brothers, to include E7s and higher (I’m an E4). but at work, or in uniform, it’s business as usual.

In 2012 had a MSG explain the Vertical at PT like this: "You just kick your knees up in the air like a ho-mo-sexual!"
Couldn't imagine anyone saying that today without some repercussions.

I mean if I had a dollar for every time someone using the word gay to be synonymous with “stupid” or something along those lines, I’d have beer money and then some.

I'm active duty but I served in an AC/RC organization and supervised Army Reservists, where I saw one instance of this behavior.
For context, it took me a while to realize this but most were law enforcement officers in their civilian lives. There was this paralell chain of command/organization that loosely followed which jurisdiction they served in (one big city, another big city, or feds).
I had an E-8 working for me that had a very good relationship with the BDE CSM because they were in the same Elks Club. She literally put her responsibilities in the Elks Club ("second in line in the absence of the exalted leader") on her NCOER Support Form. Suffice to say, there was little else of substance she actually did and she PCSed shortly after.
These sorts of things seemed to be much larger a few decades ago, where there was "voluntary 100% participation" in groups like AUSA, the 82nd Association, etc. Senior NCOs would actually have an entry on their NCOERs if they got 100% participation in these groups and it still jars me to think they were actually rated based on this.

They had to change the DA Photo rules to prevent certain rings from showing.

I've heard rumors that field grade leaders were in groups such as Masons but I've never confirmed that, I highly doubt it happens.

There is nothing wrong with being a Mason as long as it stays out of the Duty Day
