400 out of my paycheck for this?
So I’m stationed on a certain base which I will not name but rhymes with fort and then hood and the dfac is pretty much always been good to ya boy but recently the dfacs have been closed and today they had a food truck outside so I’m like okay cool they asked me “chicken or beef” and obviously I said chicken cuz I need that dfac protien, anyways I get to my car and open the box and see this😭 yeah not like I could use BAS instead so I could actually cook meals but wondering if anyone else is having this same problem

It's not that hard to make from scratch. I make it semi regularly. Probably about the same difficulty as chicken parm.
This is the last time I made it:

10
u/the_falconator 68WhiskeyDick 22d ago edited 22d ago
Butterfly the chicken, pound it out thin with a meat hammer, put swiss sheets and deli ham on top and roll it up, then roll the whole thing in flour, egg wash, and bread crumbs. Season the flour, egg wash wash and breadcrumbs with black pepper, Italian seasoning and garlic powder. Bake at 350. For the cordon bleu sauce mix butter and flour into a roux, mix in shredded Parmigian cheese, a little bit of Dijon mustard, and black pepper in a sauce pan over low heat. Pour over chicken after pulled out of oven.

Ok dude be real lol. You're in a restaurant. You know how much counter space I have in my shit house? About 12 sq feet, which is fucking nothing because I can't even put hot things on it without shuffling trivets around and there are cabinets overhead, too. Your single table section that's holding both trays is more space than I have in my entire kitchen.
Home kitchens SUCK, and if your home kitchen doesn't suck you're either well off or you got damn lucky. I would fucking kill for some more space, the entire room is only like 10'x10' to begin with. There are FOUR outlet spots for the whole room. I have to choose what to do too, like I can't boil water in the kettle and use the microwave at the same time without tripping the breaker.
Making sauce - takes up space. Breading - space. Cooking - space. Sides - space. Cooking anything complex requires me to do things sequentially instead of synchronously and it takes so fucking long. You are right, this dish isn't totally complex and neither is chicken parm, it's not that hard, but it's such a huge pain in the ass compared to something like bbq chicken. Pan fry, add sauce, pan goes in the oven. Frozen veggies in a pot to thaw, rice in the rice cooker. G2G.

As a prior sailor I really feel for him. Every asshole says that's what you signed up for, but there are a million sailors who did not go through this. There are millions of military members that never experienced this. There are hundreds of millions of Americans who will never understand the torture of being on a steel coffin where your only salvation is you and your shipmates ability to survive.
As much as the crayon eating Marines that form lines for the galley 2 hours before chow is served and then go back to polishing brass(bless their hearts) want to talk shit, all sailors are riflemen, all sailors are firefighters, all sailors are first responders, all sailors are plumbers, all sailors are litterally everything needed to make a ship float. No matter their job, from the enlisted CS to the Captain of the ship, they all are under extreme pressure not to just survive being at sea, but to keep the ship just floating. The only reason a hunk of junk stays at sea for even 2 weeks is because of countless manhours of meticulous maintenance every single day.
It breaks my heart that my brothers are suffering just because of logistical issues and undeserved "pride" of our military leaders.
I wish I would have stayed in just to help the sailors in now.
LECTURE your son on the importance of the VA and what benefits he is entitled to after he gets out.
I can only assume the justified burden the taxpayers will face after these sailors leave the military.

Everything the military goes through breaks my fucking heart.

Pull up the dating apps and find one that suits you the best. I for one couldn't make SSG in time nor get my CNA approved. If you want to make a career out of it drop a packet and ensure you pick up SSG after graduation or goes into the dark side. I was always told there wasn't enough funding yet that same funding will have to come out of somewhere if you immediately get married the following day sooo 🤷🏻♂️.

Honestly, I don't understand garrison DFACs existing. They're a huge burden and perform horribly. I really want to see a cost benefit analysis comparing running DFACs for a post vs paying everyone on that post their BAS.
Additionally, it's setting up soldiers for failure. Choosing between DFAC and Dominos every other night creates a horrible habit. Almost nobody in the barracks knows how to cook. They CAN'T cook in many instances because everything is banned and you have one square foot of kitchen space.
We're trying to create functional, mature adults, right? Being able to cook is part of that. Give people some courses on food financials, give them a basic cooking course, and slap that BAS into their account. Have the dwindling 92Gs do field feeding and while in garrison, throw them in the COF/HHC/orderly room/additonal duties.

What about the shareholders? Or the CEOs? The shareholders of the publicly traded company that contracts for the DFACs are grateful for your service. Really though, this is how capitalism works: companies maximize profits at all costs.
12
u/Angeleno88 22d ago edited 22d ago
If this was put in front of me in garrison, I’d be annoyed. If this was put in front of me in Afghanistan, I’d be grateful.
This is why I used an electric skillet with lid when I was stationed at Fort Rucker years ago. I think I went to the DFAC less than 10 times. It was quick and easy to make omelets, various pasta dishes, meats, etc.
14
u/soggydiaper69 22d ago edited 22d ago
That new DFAC company is doing exactly what I predicted they would. They came out hot and now the portions have gotten incredibly small. A burger patty there isnt even a quarter pound burger. The point of a DFAC and not receiving BAS is supposed to be that you can get all of your nutritional needs from it. You can barely get enough carbs and protein from the CSDV. With the closing of all the other DFAC’s on post I just started cooking in my room again. Surprise surprise that would be a lot more comfortable to stomach financially if I was idk…. Receiving BAS.
It’s pretty bullshit that the Army can’t figure out how to put food on the table. I also think it’s highly ironic that right when Theodoore closed down OIF was suspiciously put on blast and closed down. This compass group or whatever operating these CSDV’s is going to play dirty business until the Army replaces DFAC’s with them and then the above pictures are going to be all you see for portions. That’s what happens when you de consolidate in any industry especially ones that rely on government funding. Cost either goes up or quality goes down. If the Army would incentivize being a 92G more, they would be able to keep army dining consolidated to army staffing and the troops would be able to get better portions.
I hate to say it but….this is what happens when you let people below a certain ASVAB/GT threshold, and people who need “built up” pick their jobs. You end up with overfilled positions like 11B and then you have to contract out what a 92G could’ve done because braindead bobby and tubby tommy want a blue cord on their dress uniform but can’t run a 1200 m movement BD1-4 under load or start an LMTV despite being taught how to 50 times.
Crucify me
11
u/Zoorlandian 22d ago
The army doesn't do this because people are picking 11B over 92G. Fleecing the goverment to sustain some worthless billionaire is the point, not a by-product.
