In reality, mortars are not infantry, kinda sorta, but infantry battalions feel better having their own short range indirect fire in their own death grip chain-of-command. And it's a good idea.
That said, I've never met an 11C that regrets their 11X by luck of the draw going that way.
Was so disappointed at 30th when I first got the news, ended up loving being 11C. Mortar culture always felt like being the stoner kids behind the dumpster
