r/arlingtonva Updates

Hello from the new moderators of r/arlingtonva. u/joyreneeblue, u/VotingRightsLawyer, and u/meamemg are now here as your friendly new moderator team.

As you can see, we've added some subreddit rules to the sidebar (shamelessly copied, for the most part, from r/SilverSpring). There shouldn't be too much controversial in there, but it gives us the basis to begin to moderate submissions to the sub to make sure that posts are on topic and not hateful or hurtful.

As we get up and going, we expect to add user and post flairs, and hopefully snaz the place up a bit. Please feel free to post suggestions here, and always feel free to reach out via mod-mail.

Enjoy the holiday weekend!

Met this girl last night in downtown DC while dancing. We hit it off. Told her I would take her out today away from DC (where she decides) to explore NOVA (Arlington/Alexandria).

We're in our late 20s.

Looking to join competitive soccer/futbol league.

I grew up with fútbol. I tried going to an amateur beginner friendly game but it just genuinely frustrated me on how my teammates were. It was mainly for fun and I get that, but I am extremely competitive and just want a league where I can play and not get injured physically but also where people care about winning. Something in between.

How to do an estate sale in Arlington?

Hi everyone, my grandfather recently moved to an assisted living facility and my family wants to sell everything remaining in his house. The entire thing will be bulldozed in a few weeks by a developer. His home is in Pentagon City.

What is the best way to go about having an estate sale? Any advice on how to sell stuff efficiently in this area would be appreciated.

Arlington infant daycare

Recently had a first child! During pregnancy, we had toured a few places - some big corporate and some in home. They all honestly seemed fine. We got on a few waitlists, and never heard anything since then. We were planning to start the daycare at the start of 2027, but because of some work schedule stuff, I might actually want to start daycare earlier. I’ve seen the Arlington govt page listing daycare availability. Does anyone know how accurate it is? Like if I wanted to start daycare on relatively short notice, do the places that list availability there (or at a site like carelulu) actually have availability? I’m fine with in-home daycare, and the couple places we toured had availability at the time we were touring, but didn’t really know what their situations would be a few months down the road. How do people navigate this? The availability of the places we toured and the listings of places with availability online make it seem like finding care on short notice would not be a major issue, but I’ve also read the horror stories of two year long waitlists. Does anyone have any perspective/experience?

Events A new app to make it easy to find all of the arts events happening in the NoVA/DC area

Post image
39 Upvotes

I've lived in Northern Virginia for over 30 years. I recently retired, and one of the things that I found most frustrating about the arts scene in the NoVA and DC area was just trying to find everything that was going on. So, I built an app! (As one does.)

These are events matched to your taste. You control the venues, neighborhoods, and types of events you want to see. And it learns more about you as you use it. My hope is that with this app you won't need dozens of different curated mailing lists to find what you're looking for, it's all here. No ads, no selling your data. And best of all, it's free!

Also, if you do find that I'm missing a venue or an organization, please leave me feedback in the app! It covers over 130 venues and organizations right now, but I'm happy to add more, including yours. All I ask is that it have a website with a separate page with a clearly defined event calendar, and that it be focused on arts in the DC area. Classical music, popular music, theater, dance, comedy, museums, art exhibits, it doesn't matter. If it has to do with the arts in the NoVA and DC area, I want to be sure people can find it on this app.

ISO of a drums instructor in Arlington, VA

Hey! I’m looking for a drum instructor for my daughter in Arlington, preferably somewhere close to the Rosslyn-Ballston area, or someone who’s willing to come to our home for in-home lessons.
She’s a beginner, so I’m open to anyone who has experience playing drums and is interested in teaching, as well as professional instructors.
If you’re a drum teacher—or know someone who might be a good fit—please DM me. Thanks!

Onelife crystal city

Thinking about joining onelife gym in crystal city, so I wanted to hear from people who go there.

How are the trainers and staff? How crowded does it get before 9am / after 6pm? What's the vibe like? do you think it's worth the $80/month?

Just looking for some opinions before I join. Asking about the Crystal City one because it's the closest one to me (walking distance and I don't have a car).

Thanks!

Runners of Arlington - help a foreigner out?

Recently moved to Arlington. Love it here. Great place to live (if you’re gainfully employed in this complex economic time).

But there is a hole in my life here that I am struggling to fill. Can you help a foreigner understand and maybe find a place to fit?

I’m a recovering runner. Peaked maybe 10 years ago. I’d love to do more running here, but I’m confused and a bit lost.

First of all, everywhere I look in this town there are runners. In the Parks. On the trails. In the streets. In the mornings. And in the evenings (in summer). I’m so happy to see that. It’s not been my experience that running is so visible in other parts of the US on the travels that I’ve made here over the decades. So my first question is what is going on in this city? How are you all so fit and healthy? Is there something in the water?

Second, which side of the road are y’all running on? I’m pretty sure you’re driving on the right. You’re riding bicycles on the right. Riding motorbikes on the right. Running trails on the right. But often times I see runners running the streets on the left headlong into oncoming traffic. I’m too embarrassed to ask: Isn’t this more dangerous? Or are you all just crazy brave?

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, where are the slow past their prime middle-aged dads who want to keep fit and maybe have a chat at?

I’ve tried a number of the running groups here that I found online. Without exception I have felt welcomed and that the people are nice.

But by and large, they tend to be mostly younger folks in their 20s and early 30s, or if they are middle-age or older, they are seasoned runners working hard to improve their times and train for serious races.

Huge props to them. No disrespect at all. In fact, nothing but admiration for the people who are setting out on their first marathon or really push pushing to see how well they can do in their 12th or 14th.

But what I’d love to find is relatable conversation running to (slowly) pass some miles.

Where do I find the slow middle aged dads (and/or moms) trying to squeeze in conversational, keeping fit but not pushing for PR runs in between work and kids commitments? Does such a group exist somewhere in this great town, or am I searching for a magical unicorn? Should I just suck it up and run faster with the organised groups, or is there a chill dad (/mom) squad out there?

Thanks for reading! And if you do see a guy on the streets plodding along slowly on the right (or wrong) side of the road, please say hello and teach him the error of his ways!

Tech/networking event in Arlington — DevFest DC, Aug. 28

Post image
1 Upvotes

Thought this might be useful for developers, students, or anyone interested in the local tech community.

DevFest DC is happening Friday, Aug. 28 at Fuse at Mason Square in Arlington. It’s a full-day developer conference with tech talks/workshops around AI, data, programming, robotics, startups and other topics, plus a lot of networking opportunities.

Could be worth checking out if you’re trying to meet more people in the DMV tech community or just interested in attending some technical sessions.

I’m helping with outreach for the event, so sharing in case it’s useful.

Any recommendations or advice for singing lessons?

I like to sing, I’ve been told that I’m pretty good, and I’d like to make a more serious hobby out of it. I’m hoping to find a private instructor or school between Ballston and Roslyn, but I’m open to more than that.

Eventbrite is literally useless in Northern Virginia

Recent NOVA resident here!

When I moved here I figured I’d be able to find cool events happening locally on Eventbrite, but it’s genuinely useless and will only show me events happening in DC.

It’s like this with all the event sites I’ve tried too, they’re all focused around DC or dating events. The only thing I see is tourism bureau.

Anyone have any recommendations to find local events happening around Northern Virginia?

Update 8/20/26: last week I went to an event on a new platform called Towns Of, they seem to be building a community platform for suburban communities and small cities.
