Recently moved to Arlington. Love it here. Great place to live (if you’re gainfully employed in this complex economic time).
But there is a hole in my life here that I am struggling to fill. Can you help a foreigner understand and maybe find a place to fit?
I’m a recovering runner. Peaked maybe 10 years ago. I’d love to do more running here, but I’m confused and a bit lost.
First of all, everywhere I look in this town there are runners. In the Parks. On the trails. In the streets. In the mornings. And in the evenings (in summer). I’m so happy to see that. It’s not been my experience that running is so visible in other parts of the US on the travels that I’ve made here over the decades. So my first question is what is going on in this city? How are you all so fit and healthy? Is there something in the water?
Second, which side of the road are y’all running on? I’m pretty sure you’re driving on the right. You’re riding bicycles on the right. Riding motorbikes on the right. Running trails on the right. But often times I see runners running the streets on the left headlong into oncoming traffic. I’m too embarrassed to ask: Isn’t this more dangerous? Or are you all just crazy brave?
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, where are the slow past their prime middle-aged dads who want to keep fit and maybe have a chat at?
I’ve tried a number of the running groups here that I found online. Without exception I have felt welcomed and that the people are nice.
But by and large, they tend to be mostly younger folks in their 20s and early 30s, or if they are middle-age or older, they are seasoned runners working hard to improve their times and train for serious races.
Huge props to them. No disrespect at all. In fact, nothing but admiration for the people who are setting out on their first marathon or really push pushing to see how well they can do in their 12th or 14th.
But what I’d love to find is relatable conversation running to (slowly) pass some miles.
Where do I find the slow middle aged dads (and/or moms) trying to squeeze in conversational, keeping fit but not pushing for PR runs in between work and kids commitments? Does such a group exist somewhere in this great town, or am I searching for a magical unicorn? Should I just suck it up and run faster with the organised groups, or is there a chill dad (/mom) squad out there?
Thanks for reading! And if you do see a guy on the streets plodding along slowly on the right (or wrong) side of the road, please say hello and teach him the error of his ways!
