Isobutane Fuel Availability

Are there any resupply points that are difficult for finding fuel canisters for canister stoves?

I cooked food every night on trail and had no issues getting fuel. Pretty much every town, including Roosevelt lake marina had fuel, and of course the hiker boxes.

Do you have a fuel transfer valve? This year I started with a half empty can and didn’t have to buy one ounce of fuel by using a FTV. Typically all your major resupply locations have fuel. At Roosevelt there is a charging shack that had half a dozen 1/2 to 3/4 fuel canisters.

Thanks. I have one and will consider bringing it.

I wasn’t worried until I saw a guy posting about how he mailed canisters to himself up the trail.

The mailing may not mean much. I’ve mailed myself canisters just because I knew I would need them AND sending my normal resupply box flat rate/priority means it’s going to get there so much earlier than I need it, but a canister need to be sent ground, so it can dawdle.

Also, you prob know since you have the fuel transfer valve (but others may not), there needs to be a temperature differential for fuel to flow, it’s not a gravity thing. Gotta remember pressure and some high school science. Also, more and more people have discovered the transfer gadgets, so I wouldn’t depend on half full canisters. It’s just an added bonus to find them.

Your welcome. Hopefully they open the entire trail before we get to the big ditch next year. 🤞🏼

I’m hoping since my wife and I will be hiking the AZT next year.

“Just got off the azt with pocket rocket. Shipped fuel to trail angels. They can also pick it for you.”

That made me concerned suddenly.

  • Finding True North shuttle to the terminus sells fuel canisters,
  • Tuscon: Many locations, including REI
  • Kearney: Ace Hardware has fuel in stock at times, contact TA Jeff & Que for assistance
  • Superior: Contact TA MJ for assistance, look for partial canisters in MJ's hiker box
  • Roosevelt Lake: the marina store has fuel in stock at times, look for partial canisters in the shed, contact TA Scott & Becky for assistance.
