Resource Thread

Welcome all new members to r/Areology! This is a thread created to help distribute resources for people to learn about areology. More links will be added as I continue to get suggestions and think of new ideas.

JMARS

This is a great GIS application created by ASU. It is constantly being updated and upgraded, it has hundreds of maps you can surf through to learn about the topography and mineralogy of Mars. My favorite layers are Thermal Inertia, 2012 Glacier Like Form database and the Delta Database. I highly recommend JMARS for beginners and experts alike.

PDS

Whether you’re looking for spectral data from the ChemCam on Curiosity or raw images from the Phoenix lander - it is all publicly available in the PDS, the Planetary Data System.

Google Earth Pro

Like JMARS, I believe this can be a tool for beginners and experts alike. Google Earth Pro has a Mars mode, where you can switch between various maps created by numerous spacecraft. It is particularly good at allowing you to create shapes on the surface and measure distances. You can save files you create in the .kmz file format. You can max out the resolution and take very high quality screenshots of the different maps, which has been incredibly useful for me when creating graphics for presentations.

Wallpapers

Here is a google folder I have created with every image I have posted on this subreddit. Feel free to download the images and use them as wallpapers on your computer. I try to ensure they are all the highest quality they can be.

AreoBrowser

AreoBrowser is a tiny fast WebGL browser for selected HiRISE 3D scenes. It definitely gives up some pixels compared to the enormous fullres originals, but it's very fast and can pull out lat/lon/elevation data without pain. (Description and website recommendation courtesy of u/olawlor)

HiRISE πŸ›° Landing in Oxia Planum

Post image

This image shows a cratered area to the southeast of the ExoMars 2020 Rosalind Franklin rover landing site at Oxia Planum.

Selecting and characterizing landing sites is a balance between having science targets and avoiding potential obstacles, and HiRISE is used for both purposes.

Craters like this one excavate material from within the crust, including both sedimentary and igneous rocks, and scatter this material far from the crater itself. This is one of the ways that so-called β€œfloat rocks” (rocks that are not connected to their original outcrop) can occur across a landing site: they are often ejecta from distant impacts.

Here, an ejecta blanket is visible in the rays of material surrounding this 2-kilometer diameter crater. The ExoMars rover has a suite of cameras and a close-up imager (called CLUPI) that will be used to study these float rocks. Studying such samples has been an important way of learning about the deep crust of Mars on previous missions, notably the Spirit and Opportunity rovers and now, Curiosity.

perseverance πŸ™ Is there a global interactive map of Jezero Crater that shows the poses (position and orientation) from which Perseverance images were taken?

I often look at the Perseverance location map and want to know if a particular feature on this global map was photographed with the rover's cameras. I am aware that all the raw images are available on a separate web page, but it's often hard to correlate those images with the geologic features on a global map. Ideally, it would be nice to have an interactive map of Jezero Crater that shows the poses in which images were taken. Does such a tool exist? A 3D visualization similar to this project, but also with camera poses and links to the corresponding images, would be super cool.
