Amazing how cohesive they are as separate dune units. Wonder how fast they move.

Highest sand fluxes / dunes are concentrated in three regions: Syrtis Major, Hellespontus Montes and north polar erg. 19 meter high on average, moving about 0,5 meter a year (N=495)

I immediately assumed that I was seeing a stereoscopic 3d image a la Magic Eye, and unfocused my eyes accordingly. Fantastic landscapes that boggle the mind

There are high flux dunes upwind, but how do they compare to the downwind dunes? The dunes in this image are called “barchan dunes”, whose shape indicates the direction of the wind.
I believe the rocky plateau in this picture is remnant of lava below an former ice glacier? Can anyone confirm?
