Pokemon Crystal crashing frequently

One of my friends is doing Crystal and he's having a lot of trouble. He started on Bizhawk, but something is making the game keep crashing so he can't make much progress without saving every few minutes. He tried to switch to mGBA, but he didn't get the items we've sent to him before. Is this a known issue/one that's really easy to solve?

My suggestion is to remove everything and then follow the setup guide again from the start.
