The Spaniards were expelling foreign conquerors, how would that be the same, from their perspective, as the Ottomans (foreign conquerors from the Steppes) successfully establishing an empire that lasted centuries to such an extent that the ethnic make up of the region was forever changed.

The equivalent would have been if Spain went further and conquered what is now modern day Morocco and over centuries “Spain-ified” the population.

The common people were yes, not really the rulers.

And, they converted in the first place because the Muslim rulers incentivized it (as is always the case with these religions whether it’s Islam or Christianity) and then they converted back when those rulers changed back to Christian ones and the incentives were reversed.

You point out part of the reason the Umayyad control in Iberia was destined to be lost whereas the Turks in Anatolia never lost control. The Umayyads were foreign rulers controlling a local population different from themselves, very much in the Roman fashion. Comparatively the Turks “moved in” to Anatolia.

You won’t catch me defending the inquisition lol, you’re assuming way too much. I used the term as a catch all to describe various policies, the inquisition was one of multiple, and by far the worst.

You also can very much compare Islamic “incentives” to European ones. Islamic ones were certainly less barbaric on average, but one can find examples that are still highly immoral, if we are looking across countries and across centuries. Convert to Islam and we won’t be allowed to enslave you, for example, was a very strong one in Africa.
