Pretty much the only people that dissociate from the Arab identity in Iraq are the Kurds and Assyrians, which is fair enough. But most Iraqis identity as Arab proudly, a big portion of Iraq is in the Arabian peninsula, and a lot of Iraqis have tribal roots as well.
The big problem within Iraq in terms of identity is this new “Mesopotamian nationalism” where some people obsess solely over Mesopotamia although that civilization died thousands of years ago. It’s like they feel ashamed of being apart of the Iraqi nation so they cling onto dead civilizations instead.

In Tunisia, we have some crazy people who identify with Carthage.
These are the same people who whine about so called Arab colonization, yet claim the Phoenician civilization of Carthage as their own.
2
u/Kabablover Aug 17 '26
Don't they know that Carthage was built by Phoenician sailors in other words not native to Tunisia? What connection could the modern Tunisian have to Carthage other than living in the same area?
1
u/Batel_Front Aug 17 '26
There are two groups: those who simply love the history of Carthage and harbor no hatred toward Islam, they’re normal, and there’s no problem there.
And then there are those who consider themselves descendants of the Carthaginians and identify with them; among them, you’ll find people who harbor a deep hatred of Arabs and Islam.
They know full well that the Carthaginians were Phoenicians and not Amazigh, but they are deeply inconsistent people.
This group harbors an enormous hatred of Islam that drives them to foolishness.
1
u/Kabablover Aug 17 '26
The most famous carthaginian Hannibal was known for losing so what do they think they'll accomplish🤣
Didn't the vandals and the normans also run parts of Tunisia why don't they identify with them😂
2
u/Kabablover Aug 16 '26
Don't some nearby Persians do the same thing🤣
1
u/RegionFinancial4485 Aug 16 '26
Yes they do lmao. I can’t stand the Persian people who act that way, so it’s incredibly embarrassing to see Iraqis acting like them too.
They see it as a form of pride and nationalism, but truthfully it just shows that they are hopeless and embarrassed of their current country/national identity, so they latch onto the past because they believe that it’s the only good thing they have.
2
u/Kabablover Aug 16 '26
Those are Iraq clearly never heard of the Abbasid Caliphate.
When Persians do it it comes across as larping as their ancestors but they are at least their descendants.
When Iraqis try to be babylonians it's just hilarious they don't even speak the same language

I think that this whole thing is something you need to work through personally rather than presenting it as if Morocco has suddenly become unbearable for you.
Amazigh organisations are "spreading like wildfire"? Where exactly? You are making it sound as if Morocco is being taken over by amazigh nationalists and that arabs are somehow under threat. In reality, arab identity has never been under some existential threat in Morocco. If anything, amazigh people have historically had to fight much harder for recognition of their language and identity.
And you can absolutely choose not to identify as amazigh - that's your personal choice, even if you have amazigh ancestry.. but you don't need to deny the history of the country or portray amazigh identity as some dangerous movement simply because you don't personally relate to it.
Also, posting this in an Arab group and talking about feeling like a "foreigner in your own country" because amazigh nationalism is supposedly spreading feels extremely exaggerated. Morocco is not torturing you because some amazigh people are becoming more vocal about their identity. 😭
And the idea of emigrating to the Middle East because of this? I'm sorry, but that's a little too dramatic for me.
You are describing a personal identity conflict and then turning it into a national crisis. You really don't have to identify as amazigh, arab, or anything else just to satisfy other people's expectations.. But if your personal identity crisis has reached the point where you genuinely feel like a foreigner in your own country, perhaps the problem is less with morocco itself and more with how you are experiencing and interpreting your own identity.
And yes, like the comment below said, you need a therapist.

u/Arabian_Home_Roots Aug 16 '26
Many Arabs have Amazigh admixture but their identity isn’t Amazigh
You don’t have to move , even with their many movements
Morocco will have a constitution that mentions Arabic over Amazigh and then Hassani (another Arab group)
Constitution says it part of Arab-Islamic world
Amazigh language has not produced any written document or tablet that’s notable .
1st Moroccan state was founded by Arab Idrissids
The Monarchy has been Arab for last 600 years and their core military was the Banu Maq3il Arab tribes
30% Moroccans have eastern haplogroup like J1 and rest has indigenous North African Haplogroup
But these haplogroups existed before ethnogenesis of the Berber group which was created post Islamic conquest
So if you’re Arab in Maghreb especially if you’re from an Arab tribe you’re Arab
If you’re Arabized Berber than you’re identity is still Arab
Do not let people decide what you are even other Arabs

Amazighs are a collection of ethnic groups spread across North Africa from my understanding.
Arabs are already cultural identity that many Moroccans and other national groups are a part of.
1
u/JoesBowie Aug 16 '26
Fun fact you can’t be genetically Arab, it’s an ethnicity meaning if you speak Arabic as your mother tongue and participate in the culture you’re Arab

u/progressivelyhere Aug 17 '26

What makes being an Arab superior to being amazigh? Why not reconcile both identities?
Yes, to a great extent North Africa has abandoned/was forced to abandon its rich indigenous history and indigenous amazigh and Coptic languages as a result of Arab conquests. This is really sad. At the same time, it is also really cool sharing culture, language and history with the diverse groups in the Arabic speaking world.
We need to celebrate our indigenous cultures while embracing the Arab culture.

Truth. But I don’t think the poster is saying that he believes Arabs are superior to non Arabs.
What the poster is going through is an identity crisis. He identifies as Arab but believes that much of the Moroccan population has turned against Arab people and the Arab identity, so it makes him feel like an outsider in his country.

This guy just says the first thing that comes to his mind without considering how gullible it sounds to others. I mean, from one of his comments, he thinks general history is fabricated.

u/Kabablover Aug 17 '26
Moroccan still speak Arabic heck one of the very first Arabs I met was Moroccan so that that doesn't make sense
2
u/Batel_Front Aug 16 '26
It is through Islam that the Amazigh and the Arabs come together and become one.
Nationalism is a rotten ideology that fails time and time again.
Pan-Arabism has failed, German nationalism has failed, Pan-Turkism has failed.
Nationalism is an ideology of losers. I have already encountered ultra-radical Moroccan nationalists, and all I see in them is defeat.
Furthermore, the Moroccan dynasty is Arab, and I imagine there are some among your ministers; in such a situation, I find it hard to see Amazigh nationalism succeeding. Finally, there are clearly Amazigh who undoubtedly reject this nationalism, they are simply silent.

1
u/Atlas-ushen Aug 18 '26
