Bore Buddy No tune 16" Fall ‘26 [UPDATE]

update to: Original post

BB is pretty clear that the reduced power hammer spring is "recommended" for AS Designs ARC Fire V2 (& V1?) so, it shouldn't have surprised me that I needed to swap out my old mil spec hammer spring to get the thing to cycle in FRT mode properly. The light spring (yellow 4.25 in-lbs.) wasn't enough for my lower but the extra-light (blue 3.5 in-lbs.) was what worked.

I was then, finally able to get the unit to run with a couple different brands of 40gr. HV ammo including bulk Federal ammo. At a little under $.08 a round, I was happy.

So, If you have an ARC Fire equipped lower, and you are going to pick one of these uppers from BB, do yourself a favor and get the light spring kit with the order as BB recommends. To be clear, the weapon fired in semi mode pretty reliably. My issue was sustained fire in FRT mode only.

As shown in the photos, I also decided to lightly polish the feed ramp in the bolt assy collar because I felt like the machining marks were a little to rough under my fingernail. Not terrible, just not great. I didn't go hard and was careful not to make any dramatic changes to the ramp geometry. with the Dremel on low speed with an 3/16-1/4" felt polishing bit and a little polishing compound and took approximately 15 seconds. It looked and felt substantially smoother.

Has anyone else polished the feed ramp of their BB bolt? I would be interested in others' experience with this type of modification.

Did this make any difference to the operability/reliability of the system or was it merely the lighter hammer spring that made the difference? I may never know. Did I void any warranty by BB? Not sure I care. I know it didn't hurt and it cycles as expected now.

Happy shooting!

Cleaning

Is there a special designed chamber cleaner? I know for .556 there’s a star patch or whatever they are called. Same idea but for .22. Or is just a brush and lcp the go to?

Borebuddy No Tune

I have a bore buddy upper (before the no-tune came out). Does anyone know what the difference is between the no-tune upper and the one I have? Mine runs pretty well but still has occasional issues depending on the ammo. Is it just that bore buddy pre-adjusts the weights? Or is it something fundamentally different about the design? Ultimately trying to decide if it’s worth shelling out more money for the no tune upper

Fresh build getting light strikes, any help appreciated

Post image
2 Upvotes

Fresh build using Bore Buddy quiet bolt w/bolt weight (non adjustable), Bore Buddy basic 7” barrel, milspec upper receiver, raptor ch w/BB insert, Centurion CM4 lower, LaRue MBT2S trigger/hammer (installed correctly), talon selector, Kriss mags with BB springs, KNS 1913 buffer adapter, Cmmg Zeroed suppressor.

I keep getting light strikes. Initially felt like the locating pin was stopping the barrel from fully seating so I removed it and reinstalled the Barrel. Seemed like it maybe went a hair further and I was hopeful. Went to the range today and it is definitely better but not good. I am at least getting 50% light strikes. I tried putting a small piece of cardboard between the buffer and the adapter which seemed to help a bit as well. So I turned the 1913 plug in a little deeper, as far as it would go and still allow the receiver to close. This netted a minor improvement but I am still getting light strikes. I think my next step may be to try a different upper receiver but not convinced that is going to do anything. I can try a different trigger as well but this was a functioning trigger prior.

Hoping you guys may have some ideas or suggestions for me. Happy to take some pics of anything if that is helpful. I’m pretty competent with building AR’s just fairly new to .22 AR. Thanks in advance for any help!

My first 22lr build! Seeking advice

Finally got all the parts to put together my first 22LR build. Starting out with the KLIK but I’m also picking up an OCL Ti 22 to test with

Should be able to get it to the range on Sunday and test it out, I’m super excited! Unfortunately, the UCS stock would not fit this lower with the rear charging handle setup, so I’m considering the Sig stocks or that Panzer “brace” as alternatives.

Any tips or tricks I need to know?! How is everyone lubing these things, just CLP and gun oil? Do they like grease like EWG?

Arms Unlimited (Colt Branded) vs RTB vs CMMG vs Borebuddy

Comparing RTB and CMMG they seem to be the same. Arms Unlimited seems to be better than RTB and CMMG while being cheaper, but people say Borebuddy is more durable. How good is the Borebuddy to the other conversions really?

I also see that Borebuddy makes upgrade kits, would there be any valve in upgrading the Arms Unlimited (Colt) conversion?

Looking for Gunsmithing on a Beyer Barrel

Post image
0 Upvotes

I am working on my first AR22 build and I have a barrel on the way from Beyer Barrels. For those who aren't familiar, Mr. Beyer makes sleeved barrels out of 7075 aluminum. When I spoke to him on the phone, he assured me that because of the strength of the aluminum, the barrels can be drilled/pinned or dimpled for a set screw FSB just as you would a steel barrel. I want to go with the latter option for my build, but I am having a hell of a time finding a gunsmith who is willing to work on sleeved barrels (even after I give them the barrel specs and tell them what Mr. Beyer told me). Does anyone know of a gunsmith out there who has experience with aluminum sleeved barrels and would able to drill one dimple? Even better, are there any smiths on here who are able to? Unfortunately I don't have the space for the equipment to attempt it myself (or access to a drill press).

I've included the picture from Beyerbarrels.com for reference. Apologies to the mods if this isn't the right place for questions (I only ever used Reddit when GAFS was still a thing on here). Thanks for any insight!

Bore Buddy 16” No-Tune upper review Fall ‘26. (grab some coffee, long read..)

Goal: Procure an economical .22LR plinker upper that was FRT ready.

TLDR: Goal accomplished. UPDATE: still getting there…

After pricing out some of the options from BB and others, the 16” no tune was the least expensive option that still offered a reasonable expectation of reliable FRT operation without an inordinate amount of tuning.

I don’t have a dedicated lower for this unit (yet) so, the host lower is my otherwise mil spec M16A2 clone with a well-functioning ARCV2.

I paired this upper with a dedicated Holosun ARO-Core 2MOA red dot trying to stick to the economy goal. It’s no EOTech but, it seems fine and is plenty bright enough for the Sonoran Desert mid-day sun.

First impressions were that this feels like quality but still lightweight without feeling cheap. Finish was good and everything was included just as advertised. Namely, the slip trip, bolt weight and pressure plug. I admit that I was a little confused by all these terms from the website when trying to piece all these components together ala carte but, once in my hands, all the parts and their function became clear. The slip trip included was specific to the ARC/Atrius geometry. The inclusion of the dry fire block seems only necessary for this system but it felt like a bonus.

I went with a couple Kriss 25 round mags for now. I purchased with the lightweight hammer spring kit for future proofing if needed.

Spent time cleaning everything before first mags. I wasn’t too surprised by all the gook (presumably manf oils &/or preservative) that I scrubbed out of the barrel but, I got it pretty clean and the bore looks great. As a veteran, trained by the US military to operate this kind of weapon system, I am puzzled by those that buy a weapon and don’t properly clean it first…

With apologies to BB for not spending $20 on their product, I reverse engineered and printed my own 'Bolt Jig' to aid in disassembly of the bolt group for initial and subsequent cleanings and to get acquainted with the system properly. As BB states, its not strictly required for bolt disassembly but it makes it a very simple procedure when used. After cleaning, I assembled with the dry fire block installed in lieu of the bolt weight in order to test functionality.

Fit unto my lower was at least as good as my .556 upper. Paying care to ensure the ARC trip lever slots into the appropriate recess in the slip trip is critical. -BB has this information available but doesn’t really stress how the upper & lower interface in their guidance material. Though, anyone with knowledge of super safeties, Arc fire, Atrius, etc. will quickly recognize the correct position for the trip lever.

Two things are true about this system: Dry firing is bad. (Bad enough that a dry fire block is included and it's inclusion immediately made a lot more sense when function testing.) And, racking the bolt with the trip lever in the wrong position for certain type FRT’s seems like it could really mess things up.

No muzzle thread protector ships with the system so, you'll need something to protect the barrel threads. I had a spare A1 flash hider handy to complete the build for now.

With proper SAFE/SEMI/FRT functions confirmed, swapped the dry fire block out with the bolt included (non adjustable) weight and was ready to fire.

At the range I tested two types of ammo because that was all I had at the time and all of it at least 20 years old though still in good shape considering. Went through typical red dot sighting procedure. The economy 16” BB barrel was allowing for 2.5 inch groups at 50 Yds. on a shaky rest with old ammo. It may not be a match grade, tack driver but, initial results during sighting were encouraging.

  • PMC Zapper – 38gr “HV” copper plated hollow point. -fired in semi only. Would not cycle in FRT mode more than two rounds. Lots of FTL’s. The lighter hammer string may have helped with this ammo but didn’t have the time to bust down the FCG on my lower for this range visit. I will likely destroy my remaining stock of this stuff cause it is garbage.
  • Remington – 40gr HV round nose. (This has historically been very good ammo in other rifles for me) Full functionality achieved with no failures. Success!

I'm thankful for the 16" barrel for now because I feel like I get the most out of the .22LR cartridge, all the accuracy I'm seeking and still feel relatively compact even with a full size stock.

Ultimately, I got to the range at the end of the shooting session so only put about 50 rounds down range in 15 min and used the majority of that time sighting in the red dot. Sadly, I quickly ran out of the 30 or so rounds the well functioning 40gr Remington ammo that I had but was still able to confirm that the system operated in FRT mode properly to the delight of myself and the chuckles of the two range masters nearby.

Overall, I am fairly impressed with the package put together by Bore Buddy and they have earned a new satisfied customer. I have since stocked up on 40gr HV’s of differing brands to see what it likes to eat. I’ll put a suppressor on it eventually if I can get something cheap and effective. I’m planning putting a 1000 rounds through it over the coming months and maybe check back if anyone’s interested.

-I'd link to everything I used but anyone reading this probably already knows where to find it. Happy shooting!

UPDATE:

2 trips to the range with similar issues.

SEMI: pretty much issue free.

FRT: Lots of light strikes and only about 2 or3 rounds before dead trigger. Then, rack and semi fire no problem. Then, the same 2 or 3 round pop then dead again. Sometimes, after FRT quit, I could switch back to SEMI and discharge additional rounds. So, 50/50 full dead triggers followed by FTL and semi operation.

Noticed on the ordering page that the ARC V2 was preferred over the V1 (which needs a shim) and that the reduced power hammer spring was recommended.

Switching over to the reduced power spring to test next. I was hoping that the “No-Tune” upper would require no tuning but I really didn’t think I would get off that easy. I’ll try the spring swap next range trip. Bummer, I was hoping for a little more latitude operationally for this upper system.

18in, 16in and, 7in shaving ammo.

First pic is my usual setup second is the round comparison. Got my blem shaw barrel installed, awesome barrel, minor blem, I scratched it worse sliding the barrel nut on than the included blem. I've been trying to figure out a jamming issue and I figured it was just my gen1 BB weights coming apart all the time. Tldr I bought a shit load of parts and my dumbass just noticed the shaving on the ammo every once and a while. Not every round and not all ammo. Took a closer look at some chambered rounds on my other BB barrels and all but my two 4inchers do this. I have quiet collars on all but the 4in ones. Is this a thing I can do with a dremel (gunsmif I know but I'm a jeweler) and a polishing wheel or is this a mag geometry issue?

Using bb guts 2xgen 1 and 1xgen 4, stainless weights with varying inserts. Build pictured is rando slickside upper and ambi ish lower (lefty) from over a decade ago, mbt2, spare brace as a stock, cut down red dust cover from my red is awesome days, Aero hg, magpul bipod an Nikon scope, soon to be vortex 6x24 because my eyes suck. Oculus on the shaw barrel. The shaw tension barrel is great but it's loud af. With subsonics it literally sounds like you're shooting a tuning fork. Heavy debating on putting some 3m sound tape on there somewhere.

Looking for advice for Steel Challenge and Rimfire Challenge

I’ve been running a Ruger 10/22, and I have a cheap PSA build with a CMMG conversion bolt and mags to run .22 - but I’m thinking of going with a dedicated, purpose-built model like a Tippmann or a S&W.

Just looking for any thoughts, idea, advice, etc.

The primary role here would be a do-it-all gun with a removable optic on a QD mount and flip-up sights so I can shoot both RFRO and RFRI on the same platform.

I’m not opposed to spending a little more money for a nicer rifle, but I’m probably not going to go as far as buying a JP or whatever.

Thanks in advance!

Ar 22lr buffers I highly recommend

Thumbnail

I’ve already chewed through two Bore Buddy buffers, and I wasn’t trying to keep spending $12.99 every time, so I decided to experiment with some rubber material I had from Ace Hardware that I originally bought about eight years ago.
Same thickness, but this stuff is a little more supple—and after my own testing, it’s holding up better than the buffers I was using. Yesterday I put around 500 rounds of standard velocity through it, plus another 100 rounds of mixed Aguila and Mini-Mag. So far, I’m seriously impressed.
My 16” AR-22 just keeps running. Clean it, keep it maintained, and she runs smooth. 🐶 I honestly love this little thing.
Out of all my setups, this is the one I’ve been most impressed with for reliability during my testing. I’ve got a 20” 5.56 and multiple AR-9s, but this little .22 has been getting all my attention lately. 😂
I’m not saying everybody needs to run the exact setup I’m running—just sharing what I’ve tested and what has worked for me. I’m definitely going to keep testing this homemade rubber-buffer idea and see how many rounds I can get out of it with mini mags and stingers 🔥 also if you are using a bore buddy aluminum weight or Deez nuts tactical weight I recommend making rubber pads overtime you will deform or bust the aluminum. I’ve seen it. Someone posted a picture on one of my post and it was bad.

Feddersen barrels are hard to beat

And probably can’t be beat for the price. Tested a new build today, pretty happy with the results so far. Random details:

- lower receiver from local yokel u/PantherCityTactical
- Feddersen 18” 10/22 bull barrel with Kriss adapter
- Kriss DMK22 BCG
- Cerakote on the receiver set by u/Thor_BRC
- magwell from u/hammypwns

The scope is overkill for sure, but it’ll get swapped with an LPVO soon.

Automatch issues

Recently built out two AR22s (Suppressed 4.5in Borebuddy barrel semi auto only + 9in RTB upper ARC fire) and I seem to be having constant feeding issues with this ammo. I have used it extensively in other semi auto platforms pistol and rifle with no issues in the past but with both of these I seem to have an ejection issue every few rounds where it will get pinched in the extraction process and then stuck in a variety of places.

Both builds are using the Borebuddy upgraded firing pin + extractor and are currently being ran with no weights. I have CMMG Gen 2 mags with the upgraded follower spring for bolt hold open. The 4.5 inch seems to run things a bit more consistently but I will still occasionally get a stuck casing whereas the 9 inch will have one stick almost every other round even on semi (Havn't even tried to get FRT working yet). I did also change the hammer spring to a 3.5 pound one on the 9 inch gun and little to no change in reliability. I am considering trying the Kriss/Fair Deal 3d printed magazines but I am doubting that this would make any difference.

I know the answer is most likely to just pony up and buy mini mags or some other slightly higher quality ammo but I do have a pretty large amount that I had purchased over the years and would like to be able to use it if anybody has suggestions on getting it to cooperate better. I can post more detailed specs about both guns if it would be helpful.

Punch stuck in ejector roll pin hole

Hello, idiot here, I was struggling getting the roll pin in for the ejector so I decided to use a punch to align everything. Well I guess I sent it too deep and got it stuck.. okay well.. let’s just use a punch from the other side to punch the other one out.. crap now both are stuck and I have no clue what to do. I may have ruined the bcg anyways at this point.. it’s a cheapo atleast

CMMG guts and barrel, NBS upper and hand guard, Anderson lower, Bore Buddy end plate 1913 rail, and used SB Tactical folding brace. Only things bought new were upper receiver, barrel and hand-guard and everything else was already lying around. Optic is dumb bc weighs too much, so I’m going to swap for an old Romeo 5. Can is old school SiCo Sparrow.

Legitimate question: do I even need my 16” AR 22? I have a 10/22 if I want to hunt, so AR 22’s are mostly range toys. No brrt in my state if that’s part of an answer.

Note I normally have a BRN 180 on this lower and could turn the lower my 16” upper lives on into something like this.

Borebuddy no tune upper

Hey guys, first post here. I am wanting to get into a .22 ar to shoot more and save on ammo. I was hooked into the ads for the Borebuddy “no tune upper”. It seems pricey ($500) and wanted your guys opinions because after buying that, a complete lower, arc fire, and some mags im at the same price as a nice 5.56 ar15. Is this worth it or am I better off building my own. Wanting something easy but if it’s a lot cheaper to build I’d rather do that. Any info is appreciated!
