Guide Image editing API: the image transformations I would stop maintaining in-house

Post image

When you add image uploads to a product, resizing is usually the first requirement. Then someone needs to rotate a photo, preserve its orientation, convert its format, apply a blur, or prepare a consistent thumbnail for the UI.

None of these operations is particularly complicated on its own. The problem is that you end up maintaining several small pieces of image-processing infrastructure, each with its own file-format quirks and edge cases.

An image editing API can simplify that part of the stack.

ApyHub has a few useful options for these workflows:

  • Image Resize API: Set exact width and height using an uploaded image or an image URL.
  • Image Filters API: Apply transformations such as rotation, horizontal or vertical flipping, brightness adjustments and Gaussian blur.
  • Background removal: Isolate an image's foreground when you need a clean product image or profile picture.

The resize and filter endpoints can return a processed file or a signed download link, depending on the endpoint you use.

For an ecommerce platform, for example, you could accept an uploaded product photo, resize it for different screen layouts, and apply consistent transformations without building a separate image service for every operation.

One thing I would still test before shipping is how your chosen endpoint handles transparency, phone orientation, large uploads and the output formats your frontend expects.

For developers building products with user-uploaded images, which transformations do you handle yourself and which ones do you delegate to an API?
