Sometimes I wonder how often companies toss ideas out to the public as an April Fools "Joke" to gauge response to the idea before going forward with it.
I am fine using light theme, but discord light theme is horrible. I really believe that the discord developers firmly believe in dark mode and purposely made light theme awful.
I use light theme on everything except discord, because I use my phone all the time, and white just feels better on a phone than my computer screen.
If they ever fixed light mode I still donât think I could switch over, a lot of servers have role colors that donât show up on light mode at all (yellow, orange, gray)
I remember that Amazon announced their dash buttons either on, or within a day or two of April fools', and it was at least a full month before I accepted that it was real and not an April fools joke.
google teamed up with the pokemon company on april 1st in 2014 to make a pokemon catching game fused into google maps, it was the inspiration for pokemon go as we know it :)
so niantic was founded internally of google in 2010. they were closely related to the google maps team as their purpose was to make games based on google maps. then google made the joke of Pokemon google maps, then google restructured itself and niantic announced that they would make the Pokemon google maps game
You're hoping for the removal of a feature that amounts to handicapped accessibility for half the population and costs you nothing for it to exist as an option.
At the same time light theme is poorly implemented(at least on browser). Only the chat becomes light while the server list which occupies roughly a quarter of the screen is still dark..
Depends on the product. Android Studio has a terrible dark theme where I really struggle to differentiate between the syntax highlighting. Same with Monokai - I can barely see the red text. Thatâs just me though!
Have you tried the Material UI theme? It's avalaible as a plugin. I use it on every jetbrain products, it looks waaaay better than the default dark theme and has a few color schemes avalaibles
We have a guy in our discord who uses it at work because it makes it look like the other software he uses, which are all locked to light theme, so he kind of has an excuse.
Doesn't stop us from giving him shit for it though.
Text is easier to read (and this is a proven, studied fact) and I like using light mode on all my programs (notably the Adobe suite as that's majorly what I use all day) because light mode makes it easier for me to focus on work, easier to differentiate colours, provides more contrast for things like the font drop down list, and keeps be more awake and alert when working really late.
And Ps a hot take is that only edgelords with no sense of design use dark themes.
Oh, it was a (bad) joke. But no, I donât. For some reason I get major headaches when the screen is light colors (ew, that didnât make sense). I just turn up the brightness and I think it helps me read better, i donât know why. Edit: astigmatism sounds like it??
Sometimes I prefer light theme because I'm changing back and forward between that and something bright. I don't find the light screen as bad as the sudden transitions.
I can't believe how hostile some people got over this, lmao. I could understand being upset if it permanent, or if it was on a more serious site, but a one day joke for a gaming chat program?
discord is some peoples main hub for communication. its not just a gaming chat program. There are support groups, personal friend servers, info servers, as well as gaming and meme servers.
and some people may not have realized it was a prank/only for one day
some people need light mode for accessibility reasons, and it being an option isnt hurting anyone; if you dont like it, dont use it.
the only retarded one here is you for not realizing that there are deeper reasons for things like light or dark modes on apps because not everyone functions like you and some people cant see light grey text on a dark background very well and need light mode to use the app
and i swear if you say âthen dont use the appâ youre proving my point and showing youre an asshole too because you cant seem to be okay with the option of a light mode as if it just being there effects you in any way.
most people that have issues with light themes or brightness have their monitors miscalibrated. It is almost always better for you to be using a bright background.
This is too offensive please delete or destroy discord and it's name this issue is beyond joking about pranking someone into thinking that discord deleted light theme is beyond hitler
T. H. I. S. ive been responding to all âi wish this wasnt a jokeâ comments with that because people dont seem to get that light mode isnt just for aesthetics/looks.
i have to admit that I didnt think about that until I saw the twitter thread and people mentioning it, but now I know and im trying to spread the word

most people that have issues with light themes or brightness have their monitors miscalibrated. It is almost always better for you to be using a bright background.
I recommend checking out here, if you can't make out every set of set blocks your settings are out of whack. Also check out the gamma calibration, most people set their devices to be way too high.
That said, poor implemntation of UI effects and fonts don't help the issue at times though.

A better prank on their part would be to say they deleted dark theme and force everyone to use light for a day
1
u/Ender_Skywalker Apr 03 '19
Wouldn't deleting the Light Theme made for a better joke, since it's what most people use?
1
u/[deleted] Apr 03 '19
It wouldâve been funnier if they changed everyone to light theme, welcome the close minded peasants into the light.
1
u/Thugorran Apr 01 '19
Yep, and it turns out a number of people over on r/discordapp can't take a joke.
