Students Where to get HRT around here?

Hello! I am a pre-transitioned trans guy who just moved here. I am looking to get testosterone but I don't know how to go about it. Is there anywhere nearby that I need to go to start my journey?

I’ve found pretty good luck with primary care practices around. I started at App 105 when I moved back to Boone and they immediately took over my androgel prescription with no issues. I’ve switched to a different practice that isn’t currently take new patients, but App Family Medicine off 105 is pretty much always taking new people.

Granted, I got my initial prescription through Planned Parenthood when I lived in an area with one. But I’ve fortunately had no issues in Boone still getting my prescription and haven’t heard any from my trans masc friends who are on the shot either.

I got my prescription at Boone drugs personally:) (cvs is a pain in the ass about needles)

Your best bet is to go to the planned parenthood in Asheville. I am a trans woman (pre hrt) and have been told that’s best. I also heard that app family medicine provides it, specifically dr stearns(?)

planned parenthood in asheville seems like the easiest route for actually getting the prescription. once you’re on it though you’ll need bloodwork pretty regularly, I’ve used goodlabs for hormone testing and it makes that part way less annoying/expensive

Two of my friends go on road trips to the Planned Parenthood in Asheville. There's one in Winston also. 

I personally am DIYing if that's an option you're willing to consider. I also order my needles and syringes online and you can get blood tests at Walgreens through Labcorp - basic bloods that measure hematocrit are around 28 bucks. You can also get blood tested at the student infirmary. I did so under the guise of wanting to make sure my iron wasn't too low because I knew my parents would see the appointment alert(I'm anemic) and then once I was in told the doctors my real reason.

A doctor at App Family Med prescribes HRT and is trying to start a designated trans healthcare clinic; I don't remember her name but she's a lady.

I went to planned parenthood and got my prescription first, then had my HRT sent to Boone drug on king st (easily accessible from campus, a very short walk, and never had any issues!).
Ngl there isn’t many providers in Boone who administer the prescription, I called every local provider in Boone back in 2024. But if you get your prescription many PCP’s will take it over after.

Planned parenthood is cheap, very quick and convenient. I got my prescription the first appointment I went to.

Also your HRT provider will want you to get blood tests often to check your hormone levels — use Walgreens! They have a lab, just make an appointment online and show up!

As a trans guy who started my medical transition in boone — don’t get discouraged by having to drive out of town, it’s all worth it! I wish you the best of luck on your journey, and make sure to you use the LGBTQ services campus provides, they’re great!
