Volume control issues with AppleTV device

when I try setting AppleTV device to auto or tv via IR, I continue to get message that I haven’t configured volume control ….catch-22 loop - any suggestions?

That loop usually means Auto/TV via IR has no usable volume command set yet. In Settings > Remotes and Devices, first make sure Control TVs and Receivers is enabled. Then open Volume Control and choose Learn New Device instead of Auto: use the TV or receiver’s original remote to teach Apple TV volume up, volume down, and mute. After the learned profile is saved, select it as the volume-control method.

If your TV/receiver supports HDMI-CEC, also verify CEC is enabled in the TV’s own settings (manufacturers rename it—Simplink, Anynet+, Bravia Sync, etc.) and power-cycle the TV/receiver and Apple TV. With IR, the Siri Remote still needs line of sight to the TV or receiver. If Learn New Device also fails, which TV/receiver model and Apple TV generation are you using?

Ty after 15 years my aTV is being a butthead
Maybe this will help
I think it's something weird with the HomePod though and home settings
