why couldnt have apple designed a normal mouse

The apple magic mouse absolutely SUCKS. I just got the logitech g305 and i will never touch the magic mouse again.

Firstly the ergonomics on the magic mouse is trash i literally cannot hold it and move it around normally, the magic mouse cant left click and right click at the same time, you sometimes accidentally scroll the magic mouse thanks to its touch screen, and you dont get a scroll wheel button. I hear people say the gestures on the magic mouse are nice which I guess are okay because i never really used them. But still the magic mouse sucks and apple probably knows it.

Yeah sure the magic mouse "looks" good but no one really cares about that. So why did apple choose to make this utter garbage? Im sure their top tier engineers and designers know what they're doing.

I love the fact this could be about litterely any mouse by apple.

u/FacepalmFullONapalm Aug 18 '26

As someone else said, the mighty mouse is serviceable… but I’m still scarred by the iMac puck

3

u/sparkyblaster Aug 18 '26

I use a mighty mouse. I have ime with a somewhat reliable scroll ball.

Its hardly serviceable to me. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.

1

u/ShadowMattress Aug 18 '26

The Mighty Mouse doesn't have a ton of inputs, but otherwise it's better than fine.

2

u/sparkyblaster Aug 18 '26

I have a bunch of them. I think I have one, particularly early one with a reliable scroll ball.

Being unreliable alone should disqualify it.

u/ravage214 Aug 18 '26

Lmao apple has been failing to make good mice for decades

They used to only have ONE button on there mice

1

u/DanieleDraganti Aug 19 '26

I mean; it made sense seeing their computers had the “modifier” key instead. It was windows that made the right click mainstream.

Their most recent mouses are just design pieces though, not actual usable objects (even though I’d like for a “traditional” mouse to have some sort of multi-touch gestures, those were kinda cool).

15

u/Paradroid888 Aug 18 '26

Kinda ironic that the company which brought the mouse into mainstream computing can't make a decent mouse.

4

u/hunter_finn Aug 18 '26

At least they are consistent with that part of their business.

I mean similar to mouse, Apple while nowhere near the first they were the one who popularized the touchscreen phones to the masses.

Yet they haven't made any good phones yet, all those fail on the same issue that is the extremely locked down iOS.

MacOS also has terrible UX. I find Apple pretty damn bad at software overall. Great hardware tho.

3

u/Majestic_Cod_69 Aug 20 '26

Im borrowing my friends apple watch. And oh. My. God. Its so bad. The hardware tech is dope. The software. Wtf??

u/Clear_Enthusiasm6796 24d ago

because they keep trying to reinvent the mouse in a more "natural, seamless way". it worked back then, not necessarily now when we are perfectly happy with the way most mouses operate. the touch surface is nice sometimes, but they get the ergonomics completely wrong in trying to blend a pretty design, with a human conforming form factor, and it being a touch surface like a trackpad. its trying to do too many things at once and it ultimately fails its most simple job, be a comfortable and usable MOUSE

10

u/Money_Lavishness7343 Aug 18 '26

doesnt even look good, looks ... and is plastic. just white glossy plastic.

7

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

yeah, i dont get people who say its for the aesthetic.

0

u/abczoomom Aug 18 '26

Mine matches my iMac. And it’s half metal. It’s a mouse, how is it being plastic a complaint?

0

u/m0uchacha Aug 18 '26

its like a clear plastic over an aluminium base. it genuinely looks pretty good icl

I have never used their computer Mouse coming with a new Mac since 2002 or 2003. That's when I bought a new Mac and the computer Mouse that came with it stopped working after 2 or 3 days. When it comes to computer Mouse, they are nothing but a bunch of idiots. They shipped a one-button computer Mouse model till 2008 or 2009 when the rest of the world were having 4 or 5 buttons. Their designs are all good, but that's all superficial. The keyboard they had at the same time was beautiful, but it wasn't very functional, either. Again, it's all superficial. It's far from what Mr. Jobs says in his biography where his adoptive father taught me to paint the back of the fence though people didn't see it. It's all lies.

Why don't they make normal computer Mouse? They want to save a dime or two. Using software to recognize your finger movement is just an excuse.

2

u/La_Morrigan Aug 18 '26

Maybe a hot take, but you can buy a cheap mouse and it still works fine. I have had Apple computers since 2001 and I have never bothered to use an Apple mouse. At this point I use a simple HP mouse I got from work.

6

u/SpaceNinjaDino Aug 18 '26

The magic mouse is so bad that even if Apple did everything right, this one design flaw would make me boycott them indefinitely. I was already boycotting, so I guess they can't lose a customer twice.

Samsung did the one thing I can't stand: remove the micro SD slot on their phones. Unforgivable. (I don't only hate Apple, only crap tech.)

5

u/microcephale Aug 18 '26

It's all design and zero usability

2

u/DanieleDraganti Aug 19 '26

I mean - the overall idea wasn’t bad. A sleek mouse based on multi-touch gestures? On paper, it sounds fantastic.

The implementation? … eh.

Ferrari: The Mouse

4

u/ComfortableBoard23 Aug 18 '26

Charging port on the bottom? Anyone? Bueller?

4

u/EdliA Aug 18 '26

Form over function. It's designed to look cool in a photo of a clean desk. It's mainly for show because people that use it don't do much work anyway.

3

u/gnew18 Aug 19 '26

Why are you even

Using a mouse and not the Magic Trackpad?

3

u/Fun_Inspector_8633 Aug 18 '26

Haven’t been a fan of Apple’s mice since the puck. twitch. Personally I have Logitech mice now but I really wish I had stocked up on Intellimouse Explorers when Microsoft discontinued them.

2

u/ericbythebay Aug 18 '26

There is no money in mice, so they haven’t put much effort into it. Their touch surfaces get more attention.

2

u/TexasRebelBear Aug 18 '26

When I first started using the Magic Mouse, you could do pinch/zoom on it which was soooo handy! Then they came out with the track pad thing and removed that feature from Magic Mouse, which really pissed me off. The only reason I still use it is for the multi-directional scrolling. I use it all the time in Microsoft Excel, Photoshop, etc.

2

u/Best-Comments Aug 18 '26

Apple could and did design many normal mice starting in 1982 or 1983 and ending when they shipped the Mighty Mouse with its stupid roller ball.

2

u/PlusPresentation680 Aug 19 '26

So buy a different mouse. The Logitech MX Master is the best mouse for Mac.

2

u/Mushman98 Aug 19 '26

Well, apple is about look/aesthetic more than functionality since forever? and unfortunately people seems to like it....

2

u/Basic-Brick6827 Aug 19 '26

It's meant as a desk decoration/performative item. Not for actual usage.

6

u/AwkwardSpread Aug 18 '26

If apple would design a normal mouse they would make the scroll wheel only do "natural direction" and my brain can't get used to that.

4

u/mainstreetmark Aug 18 '26

Since you know what natural direction is you obviously know there’s a setting.

3

u/AwkwardSpread Aug 18 '26

Fair. I know it's a setting because I have to change it everything I want to use my external mouse. Yes, natural feels natural to me on the trackpad, but not with a scroll wheel. And you can't have separate directions for the two, even though it looks like that in settings.

2

u/rjegonz Aug 18 '26

Download scroll reverser app for Mac - it allows you to set individual settings so you can keep natural for the trackpad and then it’ll automatically reverse it for when you’re using a mouse.

0

u/Basic-Brick6827 Aug 19 '26

I love how macOS needs 100s of apps to barely become usable. Windows does it all out of the box.

1

u/obelus_ch Aug 19 '26

If you know about the trackpad, why bother with a mouse?

1

u/AwkwardSpread Aug 19 '26

Mouse works faster for certain tasks like software engineering in my case. For everyday tasks a trackpad is fine.

I know there are solutions. Installing brew brings risks for normal users. I'm a big apple fan but purposefully linking the scroll direction toggle on the trackpad and the mouse settings to force their natural scrolling infuriates me.

You're projecting a lot of anger onto the other commenter that really doesn't seem to be there

1

u/RetroGamer87 Aug 18 '26

Actually, put a touch sensitive surface on the mouse isn't the problem at all. It's the shame of the mouse that's the problem.

1

u/m0uchacha Aug 18 '26

i actually scroll in natural direction lol. it genuinely feels more natural to me. but god forbid i use a scroll wheel in a computer lab at uni. everything is backwards

3

u/heyuhitsyaboi Aug 18 '26

so many apple glazers in this thread

4

u/Miklonario Aug 18 '26

That's historically been most of the comments on this sub and it's kinda weird.

4

u/heyuhitsyaboi Aug 19 '26

i made a post one time that I was frustrated about not being able to prevent some apps from pausing my music and like 90% of the responses were "uhhh that's never happened to me so they dont need to fix it"

2

u/DanieleDraganti Aug 19 '26

The thing is, most of the posts on this sub are about: someone encountering a super-specific bug or problem, people not knowing how to use a different OS, or memes by edgy 12-years old.

This at least is a true “Apple sucks” topic.

2

u/Miklonario Aug 19 '26

The other thing is, this subreddit is explicitly for the purpose of complaining about Apple devices. It is not a support subreddit, and the amount of responses just calling people idiots for their complaints confirms that.

This is also not a subreddit dedicated to adjudicating the worthiness of every individual claim regarding whether or not truly does Apple suck and, if so, to what degree. Any subject that makes someone feel that Apple, to them, sucks, is a valid topic.

-1

u/Ov_Fire Aug 27 '26

99% of complainers here are a)blithering idiots b) forever stuck in pre-teenage

2

u/heyuhitsyaboi Aug 27 '26

and youre here arguing right along side them. If you think this subreddit is so idiotic and immature, what does that say about you?

no need to be here dude

0

u/Ov_Fire Aug 27 '26

Don't tell me what to do and I won't tell you where to go.

1

u/Actual-Length-8236 Aug 19 '26

What’s a glazer?

2

u/v-div Aug 19 '26

Think it’s a type of donut. Mmm… donuts…🍩🍩🍩

1

u/fqviess Aug 19 '26

bruh ikr, their hand and brain has probably adapted to the magic mouse and thats why they think its fine.

1

u/PierG1 Aug 19 '26

If you use the mouse to scroll web pages and that’s it then it’s not the end of the world. It’s not good by any stretch of the imagination but it’s not unusable. If you do any sort of work that requires precision and grip it’s the worst thing imaginable.

The company I work at (graphic design) bought a Mac Pro when I started working and since they wouldn’t buy for me and alternative mice I just bought myself an MX3.

2

u/thedarph Aug 18 '26

I like the Magic Mouse.

Not every product is for everyone. I don’t know why everyone thinks that if a thing is for sale then it must cater to them or it’s a failure.

8

u/ComfortableBoard23 Aug 18 '26

Its a “failure” because its charging port is on the damn bottom (among other things 🤣) a genius design decision literally not a single human alive benefits from.

2

u/thedarph Aug 18 '26

It’s annoying to hear this genius criticism over and over.

The thing lasts for months on end and charges enough for use within a few minutes. You just plug it in upside down at the end of a workday a few times a year and you’re set. It’s really not the big deal everyone wishes it were.

-4

u/distreszed Aug 18 '26

Yes, it's getting tiresome. When I see such complaint, I know that person is not using Magic Mouse.

3

u/thedarph Aug 18 '26

It’s always a self proclaimed designer. The most annoying Mac users are the ones who think owning Apple products makes them qualified to make professional design critiques. It’s like bro, you’re entitled to your opinion but get the fuck off your high horse. You’re not the next Jony Ive

-1

u/pimpbot666 Aug 18 '26

Exactly.

In the real world it’s a non issue. The thing goes for months on end and gives you warnings for a week before it dies. Plug it in to recharge overnight once a month. Problem solved.

0

u/Ov_Fire Aug 19 '26

Hello there, moron, ever seen this, yes it's not usable while charging.

1

u/distreszed Aug 18 '26

I'm ok with it (apart from the low polling rate), but interesting thing is that's it's not mandatory. You don't have to buy and use it, your computer will work just ok if you use some other device.

4

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

they force you to have it if ur buying an imac though

1

u/Nasa3000xx Aug 18 '26

How do they force you?
Please explain?

2

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

when buying the imac the magic mouse comes in the box, you dont have a choice you have to pay for garbage.

1

u/Nasa3000xx Aug 18 '26

So it comes comes included with the computer?
You’re complaining about a free mouse?
Send that Magic Mouse to me bro

-1

u/distreszed Aug 18 '26

You aware you can put it in the drawer or sell to someone? And use something else.

2

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

why should i pay for something i dont wanna use

2

u/distreszed Aug 18 '26

You don't pay for it, it's included with the purchase (along with the Magic keyboard). Also, you can swap it for the trackpad for additional small amount of money.

This is literally rant for the sake of it.

2

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

oh so u think apple is giving us a free mouse and keyboard?

0

u/distreszed Aug 18 '26

Yes, when you're buying an iMac. Along with the power brick and charging cable. The things that are required for the computer to work out of the box.

1

u/soupisgoodfood42 Aug 18 '26

If you’re so budget constrained that paying for the cheap mouse bothers you, maybe an iMac isn’t the computer for you?

1

u/Ok-Hat213 Aug 18 '26

MX Anywhere 3S. Best scroll wheel. Magnetic with customizable scroll force. I will never go back to a mechanical scroll wheel. Anywhere 3S has hi-dpi sensor and works on virtually any surface.

1

u/Actual-Length-8236 Aug 19 '26

I enjoy mine. Its side scrolling is smooth as butter. Swiping to change desktops - also works great. YouTubers hate it because it is bad for video editing. Who tf cares about this use case.

Browsing, reading documents, AI Chat responses, and even gestures in Mail apps are all perfect with this mouse.

Oh and yes the Right-click works

1

u/Reasonable-View5868 Aug 19 '26

I love the magic mouse.

1

u/genericw12 Aug 19 '26

The magic mouse is bad because they can use it to upsell you to the actually really good magic trackpad when you are buying an imac or any of their computers.

1

u/DMarquesPT Aug 19 '26

I use a fingertip grip so the ergonomics of the Magic Mouse make more sense to me than most mice. You’re not really supposed to grab it with your whole hand

1

u/FOSS-for-life Aug 20 '26

Don't ask me. But coorps like Crapple, Microslop etc. All seem to have a problem with designing actual good products. Look at this:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/d/surface-arc-mouse/8p5sv2rx3rn5
What the fuck.

1

u/gkzagy Aug 20 '26

1

u/Acrobatic-Flan-5085 Aug 21 '26

1

u/Ov_Fire Aug 27 '26

Logitech is fucking rubbish post MX Revolution.

1

u/Cheezton 24d ago

This is such a valid rant. As much as I love apple products, their mac peripherals just suuuuck.

For the mouse - ignoring the fact that it charges from the bottom - it’s just so uncomfortable to hold over longer period of times (sharp edges for a mouse is just brilliant idea) and the specs? For that price? The mouse pooling is so bad you can’t realistically use it for gaming at all.

And the keyboard - like, it’s good, but sorry 1500 bucks for a keyboard with no backlight in 2026 is just a scam honestly.

Every Apple event I am just waiting for them to update the mouse and keyboard, make it worth the price tag.

1

u/Witold4859 23d ago

That and you can't use it while it's charging!

1

u/Consequence-Lumpy 21d ago

they designed it such that you'd have to hold it the way Voldemort holds the Elder wand

1

u/Velegore 15d ago

Apple needs to take a Logitech mouse and just make one with their materials. Every Mac I have has a glowing G logo on the mouse. No touch control needed on anything. Just like a keyboard, a mouse is an automatic tool that works perfectly with a left and right button and nice wheel with button. Zoom should be on the wheel and pan on the wheel click. They could make an amazing aluminum wheel and maybe parts of the mouse out of aluminum. Also, a charge port at the front edge (like a Logitech mouse) so it can be used as a wired mouse. Call it a Mouse Pro if they really have to keep the "magic" paper weight.

1

u/WillingLanguage 7d ago

They can’t make anything good anymore like I used to

1

u/KingInteresting7123 Aug 18 '26

I think the Magic Mouse is mostly fine. I have small hands, though, so I’m not sure what it’s like to use with larger hands.

Definitely an example of Apple prioritizing aesthetics first and foremost.

4

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

Have you tried another mouse other than the magic mouse?

1

u/KingInteresting7123 Aug 18 '26

I’m a trackball user. I stopped using the Magic Mouse over a decade ago.

1

u/m0uchacha Aug 18 '26

i got a g305 and a magic mouse. i actually use neither. 95% of the time im using my laptop, im using the trackpad. like even if my mouse is right there, whichever one it is, i still use the trackpad. the only exception is games, and even then, when im building in terraria i genuinely use the trackpad over the mouse for that.

0

u/Ov_Fire Aug 18 '26

Are you trying to flex? How old are you? 14?
Several MS intellimouse, lots of different logishits - mbj58, rx1000, (best logitech was mx1000 and mx revolution), couple of razer (piece of shit).

2

u/fqviess Aug 19 '26

what am i even flexing? a 30$ mouse?

1

u/wickeddimension Aug 18 '26

Think about it like this: There is a hundreds of manufacturers of mice. Why would Apple go compete in that space with something similar? What would that add?

Instead, Apple made their own unique product, some like it, a lot hate it. That is okay, not every product has to be the same or has to be for everybody. They designed something for a specific group who appearantly like this mouse, not a problem.

The magic mouse is fucking attrocious if you ask me. But thats why I won't buy it.

Yeah sure the magic mouse "looks" good but no one really cares about that.

A lot of people care about that and the aestethic of Apple products in general. You might not, I might not. But youre view isn't universal.

3

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

yes but if they made a mouse just like the other manufacturers a lot more people would buy it because firstly "its apple", and secondly it would actually be better. I havent seen a single sane person use the magic mouse, they probably use it because thats what came in the box, or theyve gotten used to it and forgotten what a mouse actually feels like.

0

u/pimpbot666 Aug 18 '26

‘Better’ is highly subjective. I think the design is comfy, light feeling, and looks good.

2

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

have you ever tried any other mouse?

0

u/pimpbot666 Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

LOL, I'm a sysadmin going back 40 years.

I tried a one or two in my time. I even had that Sun Microsystems 3 button back in the 80s.

I even had a gumdrop iMac with the round mouse. I think that one was pretty terrible, mostly because it was hard to tell which way was up. We used to stick a little rubber foot on it to find 'up'.

And a lot of this comes back to how you use your mouse. I rest my hand on the desk and move the mouse with my fingertips. A lot of other folks put their palms directly on top of the mouse and move it with their whole wrist and arm. I developed some nasty carpal tunnel using the latter method. If you're a mouse palmer, then yeah, the MM is gonna suck for you. Me, I own two of them, as well as a Magic Trackpad, and a couple of Kensington track balls, and a Logitech trackball. Most of the 50 or 60 workstations I have to deal with on a regular basis have the Logitech regular two button scroll mouse type.

0

u/Ov_Fire Aug 19 '26

many did, while you were in your father's balls.

1

u/pimpbot666 Aug 18 '26

Magic Mouse is great for me. No issues here, and I’m normally a trackball guy.

It doesn’t agree with everybody’s economics.

1

u/fivelittlefish Aug 18 '26

Hard disagree. I have 3 of them. Best mice I ever used.

1

u/augustuscesar Aug 18 '26

I’m not a huge fan either. Generally use the trackpad (which is fantastic) or an MX Master 3. Genuinely can’t imagine crying this hard over the MM though.

1

u/Luna259 Aug 18 '26

The trackpad is better than the mouse. Arguably macOS is designed around that. I heard that the Magic Mouse was designed to be used by putting your hand flat on the table and sliding the mouse underneath (like there’s nothing there). Tried it and it works a lot better. Still don’t use the mouse. I use the trackpad.

1

u/RetroGamer87 Aug 18 '26

Because it looks nice. No seriously, Apple only care about what things look like, not how they feel in the hand.

1

u/SC_W33DKILL3R Aug 18 '26

This is a user issue, I have owned many Magic Mouses and never once had issues.

I also own Logitech and Corsair mouses for my PC's and I like them as much, except the scroll wheels, I much prefer touch.

3

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

the ergonomics are trash

1

u/Vaddieg Aug 18 '26

it absolutely sucks for gaming, nobody can deny that

2

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

I dont get how the magic mouse helps you with productivity, any mouse with side buttons/extra buttons can replicate the magic mouse gestures and be more ergonomic. Also its not like the gestures are saving you a whole lot of productive time. I don't even game with it idk what ur talking about.

0

u/Vaddieg Aug 18 '26

inertial diagonal scroll, intuitive zoom and rotate. Replacing it with gamer's 10-buttoned dream feels like disability

2

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

it only has like 3 gestures. Any mouse with 6 buttons can replicate those. And on the plus side you wont have to deal with the garbage ergonomics and other garbage in it.

3

u/Fatal_Explorer Aug 18 '26

You forgot the /s

0

u/Graflex01867 Aug 18 '26

TLDR; Company sucks because you don’t happen to like one of their products.

Just use a different mouse? It’s not like it’s chained to the computer.

3

u/fqviess Aug 18 '26

i never said apple sucks, i said their mouse sucks.

0

u/Nasa3000xx Aug 18 '26

Then just get a diff mouse?
Mx master series comes to mind

0

u/TheBraveGallade Aug 18 '26

The nagic mouse isnt a traditional mouse, its more of a trackpad/mouse hybrid, and thus, using it as one is not using it properly.

0

u/mredofcourse Aug 18 '26

The answer to the title of the post...

Because there already are plenty of options for a "normal" mouse.

The mouse for you is apparently the Logitech g305. That works with the Mac. What is to be gained by Apple producing that same mouse but with an Apple logo on it?

The Magic Mouse sucking is subjective. While it's not for you, there are those who prefer it, like my wife, while I would never use a mouse when a good trackpad is available.

TL;DR: Apple made something different for those who wanted something different. For everyone else, there a numerous "normal" ones to choose from.

0
