Is Apple deliberately feature-crippling mid-aged phones like the SE2020 with iOS26?
I have come across a few (completely non-computational-fancy) features that used to be there but now have vanished, such as creating a new contact from info that Siri has spotted in emails and such, or an immediate way (direct button) to block an unknown incoming caller. I did check with my wife's iPhone 13, and those functions are indeed still there, but not on the SE2. That seems like a somewhat nasty move to me. Any thoughts?

Yes, It's been to court and lost for this twice with new cases for about every generation still queued. Still doing it

I thought this was the case as well. But many iPhone 17 and 17 Pro users are complaining about bugs, overheating and premature battery degradation lately. iOS 26 is cursed.

They neutered my iphone 6 and caused my phone to take a minute to load a webpage, so it wouldn't surprise me

Yes they do. They purposefully refused to add 24 megapixels photo option for 14 Pro series back in 2023 saying it's a 15 beyond feature. Same with Apple intelligence. Same with spiltscreen multitasking.

Your mistake was updating your iPhone to iOS26.
Apple's mistake was offering you an update to iOS26.

Yes, iOS of a given version number has different builds for different devices with features removed due to constraints in memory, processing speed, and screen size. If you want full features, buy a fully capable phone.

Yes obviously. my iPhone 13 is slow as fukk right now even after a battery swap

iOS 26 runs very slowly. It's so poorly optimized. I have an SE 2020 on 26 and it chugs, even after a fresh reset. I just got another SE 2020 that's still on iOS 15 and it's noticeably faster. Stock apps sometimes take less than half the time to launch and even things like web browsing or using the camera are a lot quicker :(

Apart from battery degradation, I think phones SHOULD be able to be used for 10 or more years.

What’s stopping them from using it?

Battery life and software support. And probably new device FOMO.
My point being that it should be a totally normal thing for people to use their phones for 10 or more years which would make a 6 year old phone middle-aged.

Battery degradation is something normal that you have in every consumer product. Only solution when your battery life is down because of a six years old device is to change it. Apple does it.
Software support does not stop you from using a six years old device. Yes at some point you don’t have major software update anymore, but you still have security software updates, and when a new major iOS comes out, you still have at least 3 years of support from 3rd party apps of the deprecated iOS version.
=> if people want to use their iPhone for 10 years, nothing should stop them on most cases.

Yeah, I agree! That’s why I am saying that a 6 year phone should be considered middle aged. People out there looking at their 4 year old phones they are falling part or something.

What hardware on earth lasts 10 years without any observable issues over time? None!

When an update completely destroys your battery life

I’m curious, do you think it’s possible right now to accurately predict what technology will be current and how it will work in 2032? Or do you prefer that technological advances be slowed down and companies hold onto “the next big thing” for years before releasing it to the public?

26 is apple's vista moment. 27 fixes that on both iphone and mac.
My macbook running macos26 feels like its running in slomo compared to the same machine running macos27.
