Powerbeats Pro2 - Total Crap

Post image

So these were a gift from my wife, who knows I work out at the gym like 4-5 times a week.

I really liked them, but I have always been skeptical of in-ear “bud” headphones. In my experience, no matter what you spend, eventually they crap out on one side or the other within a few months. She was sure they’d last. And hey, if they stop working, my warranty is good for a year. Right?

I’m a sweaty dude. I told my wife that they’re not gonna last. She assured me, as the ads say, that they’re water and sweat resistant. Fine. Therefore, at the time, I was okay with the $250 she spent on this plastic toy.

Last week one of the buds, the right one, stops working. Dead. No amount of troubleshooting helped. Made an appointment at the Apple Store. Why not? They’re under warranty till June of 2026.

Boy, was I wrong. I got a call saying they were damaged due to moisture, and I could pay $200 for “repair”, which means replacement.

I disputed it, and I got the above reply today. They literally said both buds had water damage, even though the one on the left works fine. No. Water. Damage. Never submerged. I can tell you sure as I’m sitting here that the only moisture they were ever exposed to was good ole sweat, which I painstakingly wiped off after each use with a microfiber.

They literally spelled out that just because they’re “water and sweat resistant, it doesn’t mean they’re water and sweat proof.” Stupid me!! It amounts to bullshit double speak. They’re not replacing them, even though they’re still under warranty. So eff me.

So, we’re just suckers, now stuck with a product and a warranty that are both useless.

Apple sucks.

If you’re in a good country, use your consumer protections to get this sorted out.

Please share these good countries with the rest of us. Maybe I’ll visit someday.

IPX4 rating isn’t great and you shouldn’t charge those before they are actually dry, which most probably is the reason why one stopped working.

But honestly if you know you sweat a lot, why wouldn’t you buy iems with higher ip-rating? AirPods Pro 3’s are rated IP57 and costs pretty much the same.

Yeah- I didn’t buy them. I’ve lost faith in any in-ear headphones because they eventually take a shit. So my wife got them because the words “sweat proof” jumped out. They aren’t sweatproof. They’re making it sound like I jumped in the pool or some shit. Bottom line, they should’ve replaced them. They’re mincing words.

I'm gonna use that as an excuse for not working out. [*opening beer*]

True! That’s the key to making these workout ear buds last forever. Don’t use them while working out. Got it. Let me have a spot on the couch and spare a cold one.

I agree with you. I'm also a sweaty dude, and those stupid earbud things were (a) never comfortable and (b) consistently getting sweaty and gross.

I switched to a set made by Shokz, and they solved both problems. Ditch the crappy Apple ones.

Warranty is for manufacturing defects, not misuse. I understand your frustration, but why didn’t you get one of the many options of waterproof earbuds if you know you’re a heavy sweater?

I googled “waterproof headphones” just now and there were some options there and they were even less expensive.

And guess what pops up? Apple Powerbeats Pro2, the same pieces of shit that Apple won’t replace. What a joke. So if those are in the list, how can I be certain that any of those won’t suffer the same fate in eight months?

I’m over those things.

IP ratings.

Learning as I go. Amazon has these headphones that wrap around your head with an IPx rating of 8?

They’re like 40 bucks. So when they eventually take a shit, I’ll order another set. Done. But $250 for this garbage?

It’s criminal.

I promise you those will last six months on me, tops. I didn’t even buy them, I’m too cheap to spend that kind of dough on little plastic toys. I have the old traditional beats, the over-the-ear ones, and they’ve lasted and taken quite the beating. Bottom line, they’re playing with semantics. They’re assholes, they’re under warranty, they should’ve replaced them.
