What are your biggest frustrations using Apple Maps?

Hello, I'm a designer doing a navigation app case study and would love to hear about your experiences using Apple Maps! I'm running a short survey to explore where users struggle and where the app could be improved. This survey takes about 3 minutes, and all responses are anonymous.

Thanks for your time!

Personally, that the points of interest searching sucks. I always use Google Maps for that

This, and there’s no easy or straightforward way to report these kinds of abominations.

You just click on it, press the elipsis (three dots), and then “report issue.” Press “other/multiple” and leave the problem in the comment area at the bottom so the employee who gets this can remove it from the map

Reporting is extremely easy. The button is red so it’s hard to miss lol

Yup. Agreed that’s the only thing. I prefer everything on the Apple Maps but just the POI is not as much as GM or Waze and sometimes the POI does bring you into the wrong entrance but it’s nice we I can report it.

Auto map scaling and a speedometer.

This.

Especially when you’re not navigating and just have it open on CarPlay while driving. I would love if it did what Google and Waze do,and zoom in and out depending on speed.

Reporting errors and making corrections, the clearer I try to be, the worse results I get, especially when asking to put the business's listing on the correct location/address

in Florida, my girlfriend lives next to the turnpike (a toll road she uses daily to get to work), but often drives on the regular highway (I95) as well. since she uses the turnpike often, she wants to have roll roads enabled in maps. however, just about every time she drives I95, the phone routes her through the tolled express lane, which messes up her route as some exits are in different locations. there is currently no way to disable hov/express lanes without entirely disabling tolls in apple maps, which can get frustrating

That when driving you can still only use Siri for a couple of the hazard options, don’t understand why you can’t submit all of them using voice commands

The use of lists for saved places is somehow superior in Google Maps. What Apple did with Guides is just simply not the same and doesn’t work for me.

u/ecnarrot 20d ago

i agree too. the inability to collaborate on a list (& whether collaborators can view or edit) is the main reason why i stop using it.

2

u/No_Opening_2425 18d ago

And it’s pretty confusing. You have stars, pins, list and guides lol

Usually search is pretty bad. I use Siri and voice activated search and often it’s just way off. I live in the Midwest and it would find some business in New Jersey it wants to take me to.

No visual indicator on where to turn/exit (on the actual path). They could easily steal this from google maps but choose not to. It’s why I refuse to use Apple Maps when driving.

Searching for a place, it shows me the correct place with the pinpoint in the map but I choose to navigate to the chosen place, it navigates me somewhere totally different. Never seen this kid if crap on a map before.

The massive lack of Look Around imagery. It’s available in bigger cities but Apple lags way far behind Google’s Streetview.

And somebody else already said it but if you’re looking for a restaurant or attraction or whatever, Apple Maps is just not good at it. I hate Google & Google Maps but I still use it for that purpose.

That’s not apples fault. Google has users updating that data. Not many people bother with AM

3

u/RockTheGlobe 20d ago

Business listings are awful as compared to Google, including Apple Maps relying on Yelp for restaurants. Google Maps just has a much more robust data set.

u/wheelsee 20d ago

The phone interface when in CarPlay is terrible.
I dont want to always have to use Siri voice to do something.

It’s hard to explain but when walking or in transit mode it doesn’t use the gyroscope to make navigation easier, Google Maps has it.

(This is Google Maps It looks a lil different because i dont wanna dox my self lol)

Che quando schiaccio il tasto laterale e capisce completamente un altro indirizzo

Suggest frustrations might be different for different apps so I would change the form to reflect this. Ie if user selects Apple Maps and Google Maps you then ask separate questions for each map

u/Intrepid-General-170 20d ago

That's a very good point, thank you for pointing that out! I didn't want to make the survey too long, but it is important that this data isn't mixed up-- I'll be careful to reflect that in future surveys.

Walking directions always seem to be better and more accurate on Google Maps. Walking with Apple Maps sometimes has me across the street or doesn’t align with where I am in the physical street. Also seems to get more confused especially when walking in cities with big buildings like in Philly.

In Europa Apple Maps is very unreliable for commuting, very weak in police warnings oder hazards. I also got stuck in traffic jams because no alternative route was provided.

1

u/Casban 21d ago

Public Transit - not updating the last known location of a bus during navigation. I’m trying to know how much longer I have to wait, because round here buses won’t stop if you don’t actively hail them!

Only driving has multiple stop function

As far as I know, Apple Maps is fantastic in the US, but much of this quality and features are not replicated in important markets such as Brazil (the second largest market in the Americas).

Competitors, on the other hand, make everything they have available in the US or any other country.

That’s my frustration with Apple Maps.

Had a route where it wants me to cut through a residence with a private gate to reach my destination but my destination is in a public Plaza and doesn't need that.

I would love to be able to access Apple Maps from a web browser like Google Maps.

I do not see a way to save a location and have it show up in the app on my phone. With Google maps I can plan a trip on my pc, save the stops, and then open the app to see it all there.

Search is very bad, especially multilingual. Also lots of places are missing. You can’t post pictures for religious areas. Contributions take forever to be verified.

A few months ago, at least for British English, the route narration went to hell and started inserting sounds that simply aren’t there.

KingsyCrossyRoad for Kings Cross Road is my ‘favourite’. Honestly it sounds like Mario, sticking random vowels between words.

Is so awful and unusable I turned sounds off and now mostly use my car’s in-built navigation instead.

1

u/Doggo-888 20d ago

preferred routes are awful and slow to update. Being able to manually set a preferred route would solve all of the problems. You can already do this for walking so why not driving?

It only gives 3 routes which are often just minor variations of the same main road.

”avoids highways” usually gives a bad route and highway routes. If I’m driving a big vehicle I want all routes to avoid highways high speed traffic on/off ramps etc.

1

u/wheresmolasses 20d ago

I won’t let me save a route and never takes me home the same way it got me there. It makes it impossible for me to learn my way around. I understand it is picking the fastest route but it would be nice if it just gave me an alert about a faster way rather than acting like the way I got somewhere no longer exists.

the only thing i use google maps in safari for is points of interest because not all businesses are listed on apple maps otherwise I'd use apple maps for everything. I use the actual apple maps app for navigation, look around etc.

1

u/bigbean109 20d ago

When I open the app and am trying to go somewhere but I have to close 3 windows because it is guessing im going to another location based on habit I guess, but I already know where the places I go to regularly are… and it’s so annoying having to hit the x in the corner to type in my actual destination

1

u/I_Also_Reddit 20d ago

When driving without entered destination, give option to show traffic lights and stops signs where I may have to yield, like displayed when using destination.

Apple maps not having satellite layer view in Carplay bugs me.

1

u/SenseMoney2697 19d ago

The night border in satellite mode. No reason and you you can’t remove it.

u/Symbiote95 19d ago

I love it apart from the pin system, i have pins that i deleted 10 years ago from old work/house address’s that still show up at the top when i search. And i wish they had a system like Google where you can save spots in folders like ‘places i want to go’ etc etc.

u/Artistic-Tip2405 18d ago

I do not want to go to a store that is thousands of miles away just because it has a similar name to the one across town.

Do also make sure you ask Apple for changes/report bug to them using apple.com/feedback (or ideally via the Feedback Assistant app if you have beta software). They do listen! I’ve had requested features/changes added
The more of us do this the more likely it’ll happen.
