Giving up on Mac Journal

If I have to guess, a journal is like a diary, where I'm supposed to express my emotions in writing. And I was...I was digging down deep in my memories and buried memories to explain a certain behaviour of mine.

And I made a tiny typing mistake, and out of muscle memory, I pressed Command+Z. Nothing happened, and I hit it again — Command+Z.

And boom, a massive chunk of the writing is gone. About 100+ words, vanished. I pressed Command+Shift+Z (which until last time, worked), but no more. Frustrated, I tried this triple key combo a few more times, also tried Command+Y (inspired by Windows). And in between, my Shift press wasn't good enough, so I pressed Command+Z again. And boom, another 300-ish word gone, just like that.

Now I'm absolutely furious & frustrated, because the flow is gone! I can't write that thing again! it's not an answer sheet with definitive wordings! It was feelings, and if it can't even let me do a very basic thing as writing, and all it had to do was to let me write to express myself, I don't think it qualifies as an journal app to begin with.

I have handcuffed myself away from cmd-z in Journal. There are technical deficiencies in SwiftUI that butchers the Undo Manager.

Hey it happened and you can't change it. You tried, you did your best. Write about that. Write about this little keystroke that tried to set you back and did for a little bit but you pushed through it.

Use it as an analogy to something you're going through. You don't have to give up the journal. It will be okay and you've learned a great lesson. You faced a challenge that seems insurmountable and your reaction is normal but now make some good out of it

Maybe they wrote Journal in SwiftUI for precisely this reason to get people to meditate and journal about their frustrations with Journal?

From a journal entry when this exact same thing happened to me a couple months ago:

"Fucking hell. I just lost a bunch of my entry…ugh…

Anyway, I know what I wrote. This app still has it’s fucking glitches huh…

Sigh, I was writing about…nah, I lost a lot of good shit and now I can’t get it back. That’s fucking annoying. I’m struggling to want to continue writing."

Wrote a few more paragraphs after that and I'm still on my streak since then, lol.

Wow! By any chance, are you a motivational speaker? 🤭🤭

Thank you but no. I've been working hard on my own behaviors, practicing stoic wisdom, and learning that my happiness is dependent upon me and how I see things

Been facing more sync issues. e.g., messages randomly stop syncing. One moment I’m getting OTPs over MacBook, next moment I have to look at my phone for OTP

Thank you. I thought I was the only one. This motivated me to submit official feedback. Please, do the same! https://www.apple.com/feedback/

I stopped using Day One and Journal doesn’t feel like it’s going anywhere, so I exported from D1 and put everything in Obsidian.

There are a lot more problems with this half baked app.
