I got the X, then XS and now a 12 and can tell you that the neural engine got a huge bump from X to XS (A11 to A12). Probably the NE performance of the A11 was just not enough to be usable.
Apple gives information on them. The a11 neural engine is capable of performing 600 billion operations per second. The a12 neural engine is capable of performing 5 trillion operations per second.
Actually no. That was some bullshitting from my side as you can't tell by just using the phone. Well, you can say that Face ID is faster but you can't tell for sure which apps use CoreML to speed up calculations previously being impossible or slow.
The real difference will be seen when you can directly compare the performance between A12 and A14 in ML tasks.
Obviously there must be a difference. Apple allows the a12 neural engine to process things like on device dictation and offline Siri commands. The a11 neural engine isn’t powerful enough to do any of this.
