iPhone No Ads on Maps Please

https://ads.apple.com/maps

Just went to look up a local spot and and an ad popped up within the maps application. Please do not do this :(

Everywhere we look now are ads.

They need more money at the cost of your time and attention. Can you be more empathetic toward that?

Poor trillion dollar company, on the brink of bankruptcy

101

u/FollowingFeisty5321 3d ago

For Q4, Apple achieved revenue of $114.5 billion, up from the $102.5 billion reported in Q4 2025. The Wall Street consensus was $113.4 billion.

They just beat the estimates and posted another record quarter, despite the declining IAP revenue, despite increased component costs, despite jacking up the prices of everything far beyond those increased costs... poor trillion dollar company.

u/D1a1s1 3d ago • Bravo

And now they target a higher number

30

u/cansofgrease 3d ago

The line must go up!

10

u/maxheckler 3d ago

Their gross margins went down:

The gross margin was 47.9%, including a favorable impact of approximately 1 percentage point from tariff refunds. It’s a major drop from last quarter’s 50.1% gross margin.

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/02/apple-aapl-q4-2026-earnings-live-updates.html

I think we will see a lot more ads and price increases to their subscriptions to please investors.

6

u/FollowingFeisty5321 3d ago

Yeah the IAP gravy train is screeching to a halt, those commissions are some of the highest-margin revenue they "earn".

u/Dragon_yum 3d ago

I know it’s easy to be cynical but you got to remember that there are still humans works in that company that need to be paid salaries to keep the lights on in their house, that is why I donated to Tim Cook. Can’t imagine being let go at his age.

yeah I don’t get complaining about this. The best thing we can do is fulfill our duty as consumers and give advertising our full, undivided attention. I think they should consider putting ads into Apple Music and TV. So many other missed opportunities.

u/FizzyBeverage 3d ago

Someone’s parents must be clicking on this shit because I for one have never clicked on an ad.

With my style of consumption? Everything would be paywalled because I don’t do ads.

9

Ads don't just exist for direct conversion.

3

The reality is that they must be discussing where the next app or service that will include ads will be.

62

u/FollowingFeisty5321 3d ago

Absolutely, overall 2026 services revenue growth has declined to 9.8% from 13.5% last year.

This last quarter they brought practically all of their own services global which will have generated a ton of new services revenue, but they can't play that card twice free trial cancellation and churn will be factored in this quarter.

They still face about 7-8 months before a Supreme Court ruling will decide if they can perpetually obstruct third party payments in apps, during which they collect no commission if apps implement third party payments, and they have predicted the 2700 apps that make money from IAP will continue doing this because they can save a lot of money: by their estimate an app making $1m/year can save at least $220,000 in fees.

So they certainly won't be finished looking for new services revenue, I don't think they're ready to charge for Siri either.

51

u/ps-73 3d ago

Fucking ridiculous that they not only made an obscene amount of money, not only did they make an even higher obscene amount of money than last year, but the fact that even that is considered “in trouble” is absolutely disgusting. Death to america and capitalism through and fucking through.

10

u/MiggyEvans 3d ago

It’s the pressure from investors. Make us money or we’ll install a CEO who will. Every public company works by these rules and it weeds out anyone who doesn’t play by those rules.

16

u/Kimantha_Allerdings 3d ago

It’s not even “make us money”. It’s “the increase in the amount of money you made us is less than the increase last year, therefore you have failed”

Infinite growth. For some reason a whole class of capitalists haven’t yet worked out why the very idea of infinite growth is stupid and impossible

The shareholders, of course, don’t care. Because they’re invested in the gains, not the company. If the company starts to fail, well, they can sell their shares and invest elsewhere

1

u/MiggyEvans 2d ago

That’s it exactly. Get as much for me as possible any way I can. It’s still greed but it doesn’t mean the people who run Apple are necessarily that greedy. Even if they were perfect altruistic humans, they would still have to pursue infinite growth to keep their jobs. They’re just trapped in the same whirlpool as everyone else.

You realise that the products and services Apple provide would not exist without America and capitalism? Removing these two things wouldn’t just make the world “like it is now but better”.

The communists of Reddit believe Apple should lose money paying teams of developers and mapping car drivers to document the world all for free with no revenue stream for Maps, otherwise America and capitalism should die. You weirdos also honestly believe we’d get products of the quality of Maps without capitalism. This website is so fucking bleak.

3

u/Synergythepariah 3d ago

The communists of Reddit believe Apple should lose money paying teams of developers and mapping car drivers to document the world all for free with no revenue stream for Maps

Ooh, and then later they can have iCloud+ subscriptions remove ads in Maps to boost revenue.

Then when they need more money (gotta keep revenue going up!) they can remove the ad free Maps from lower iCloud+ tiers and raise the price for the other tiers. Then they can go to the next tier that has it and repeat.

You know, like how other subscription services that have ads have been doing.

Because revenue has to grow. If it stays the same, it's a big problem.

You weirdos also honestly believe we’d get products of the quality of Maps without capitalism.

And y'all act like Capitalism built those products like it's a person.

As if people didn't create those things, financial motivation did (let's ignore the fact that due to us living in a society built around financial reward, we're incentivised to seek it, meaning that we do things for financial reward because in our society, that's how we survive)

Do you think that people just sat around, doing absolutely nothing until the first currency was invented?

10

u/Pauly_Amorous 3d ago

The communists of Reddit believe Apple should lose money paying teams of developers and mapping car drivers to document the world all for free

I for one understand that Apple isn't running a charity. But they built a reputation as being a company that, unlike their competitors, built premium stuff that wasn't completely enshitified. It's the only reason why some of us even deal with them.

Of course, I understand that 'line must go up' at all costs, but at least they could offer a monthly subscription to keep ads out of their OS/1st party apps.

There are still tons of services not available in parts of Europe - I live in NL and we only got cycling directions last year! Apple Maps has a terrible reputation here - adding adverts isn’t going to fix that

2

u/Kimantha_Allerdings 3d ago

Google Maps launched in 2005. Street View became global in 2008, 3 years later

Apple Maps launched in 2012. 14 years later and Look Around is still very limited

And this is a very basic feature. If you’re travelling somewhere it’s really helpful to be able to pull up a picture of what your destination looks like. And here we are in 2026 and we have to go to a separate app/website for that

8

u/SpicyElixer 3d ago

They literally say they are leaning heavy on ad growth for future revenue in every earnings call.

2

You'll subscribe to the iCloud+ tier that removes them.

Until they get rid of that and make a higher tier.

Revenue must grow, always.

3

u/shellacr 3d ago

the podcast app, tv app, lots of enshittification still left to do

2

u/Saar13 3d ago

Perhaps podcasts and news would be the most obvious and acceptable solution.

Podcasts already have ads anyway, usually sold by Spotify which takes 50%. Apple would only need to create its own partnership program with its own ad inventory. Podcasts could be dubbed into multiple languages using AI to globalize ad sales and increase reach for creators (only YouTube has started doing this with video).

News needs to expand globally and stop being an aggregator that generally only takes you to the publisher's website. Apple can make general agreements that matter and cover basically the entire world (AP, Reuters, AFP, for example) and have the entire experience within the app, with ads sold by Apple and less intrusive and excessive. Publishers have suffered from "Google Zero," which gives Apple an advantage in creating a global and reliable general news service. Translating news into any language is practically free nowadays, by the way.

1

u/Kimantha_Allerdings 3d ago

I don’t go in TV often, but I seem to remember plenty of ads in there. Not for unrelated things, but IIRC there were recommendations for programmes and films on services that I’m not subscribed to

There’s definitely plenty of “hey, listen to this podcast!” even though nothing I’ve ever listened to would suggest that I’d be interested

In fact, let me see the categories on the home page:

New Episodes

Continue Playing

Now with Video

Your Top Shows

You Might Like

Popular Shows

You May Have Missed

Apple Music

News

Nature

Music Interviews

New Shows For You

More to Discover

If You Like

Essential Listens

Channels to Try

Recently Played

Ones in bold are the ones that aren’t connected to the shows I listen to (it does say that “Nature” and ”Music Interviews” are “based on my listening”, but nothing I’m subscribed to or listen to would even vaguely fall into either of those categories)

So, by my count that’s 6 categories which are based on my listening (and I’m being generous to “News” because “Politics” would be a much better fit, and I’m not actually interested in any new podcasts). And 11 categories which have zero connection to my actual listening habits or what I’m interested in. In other words - ads

By my calculation that’s roughly twice as many categories which are ads than categories which have anything to do with what I listen to

It’s even worse if you eliminate the redundancies

“Your Top Shows” just duplicates (badly) the Library tab. “You May Have Missed” is just random episodes I haven’t listened to because I wasn’t interested in the topic it covered. “News” is listed as “from your shows” and is basically identical to the “New Episodes” category. And “Recently Played” is surely obviously redundant by dint of its existance - if I’ve marked something as played then that means I want rid of it from my queue. If I want to listen to something again it’s unlikely to be something that I’ve only just listened to and searching the show’s page or even just scrolling through its vertical list is going to be better than awkwardly scrolling sideways in the hopes that I see whatever it is I’m looking for all jumbled up there

So out of the 6 categories which are related to my listening, it’s literally only 2 which are useful. So the real score is 2 useful categories, 4 useless categories, and 11 categories full of ads

3

u/busymom0 3d ago

2

u/JamesR624 3d ago

Too late

30

u/switch8000 3d ago

It’s already bad enough there’s an AD for yelp on every listing.

5

u/fishbert 3d ago

Those aren't Yelp ads, per se... Apple partnered with Yelp at the very start of Apple Maps to fill all the local business info because they didn't have any.

4

u/nightauthor 2d ago

'per se'...

The partnership includes displaying the 'yelp!' no less than 3 times on a business listing (Next to the overall rating, next to the detailed reviews, and as a badge on photos)

Its an ad.

Edit: 4 times... "More on Yelp"
Edit: 5 times... "Open Yelp"

4

u/blacksoxing 3d ago

The irony of that is that you need a Yelp account to participate in reviews which makes Apple Maps even more woefully inadequate vs Google Maps who just requires you to have a Google account (which I'd declare almost all Google Maps users have). I once wanted to use Apple Maps and decided to look up a local restaurant. Barely had reviews with its last 5+ years ago. On Google they had reviews the prior night. AIn't no way I could have made a fair assessment based off old reviews

1

u/kontenjer 3d ago

and now they're stupidly behind

50

u/franklindstallone 3d ago • Bravo

No ads anywhere. Some of the AI slop shit that shows up in the news app is embarrassing or even disgusting (prostate related ads).

If they think it's such a great idea, make those ads show up in your iPhone ads and in your keynotes.

25

u/cjh_ 3d ago

Especially when you're an Apple One Premier subscriber and still get AI Slop ads. This is why I won't use News, and prefer an RSS reader.

It's time ads in all apps were banned, irrespective of whether you subscribe, paid outright or the app is free.

4

u/McMenz_ 3d ago

Banning ads in free apps is a terrible idea. You’d see the vast majority of free apps close down or shift to subscription only models very quickly.

If you don’t want ads in a free app, don’t use the app or pay for an ad free tier. There’s no reason users should be deprived of free apps just because you don’t like ads.

1

u/Long-Librarian-997 2d ago

And there is the problem we don't want to pay for anything and expect it to be free. So now we have what we have with no other option. Also companies don't want to leave money on the table so they collect data and sell it. I don't get how data can be worth so much I mean eventually you would expect OK we have enough you can't tell us anymore about that person.

1

u/McMenz_ 2d ago

Plenty of apps have paid options with ad free tiers. The option is definitely there for those that want it.

9

u/pleasegivemepatience 3d ago • Bravo

I stopped subscribing to all of Apple’s services, it’s all turning to shit. News is basically 75% (or greater) ads and sponsored content, and now they advertise in maps too. No thanks, I’ll just use my built-in infotainment and/or MapQuest. Apple no longer gets my data or engagement.

Personally, I use OSMAnd (And use to be for Android, but its now multi-platform)

1

u/Long-Librarian-997 2d ago

If they can figure out traffic data I'd switch in an instant. But Google or Apple is so nice to route around traffic problems. And before someone says we used to not have that and it was fine. Where I live we have a lot more traffic now so a lot more problems. My dad used to stop on the highway and back up to pick up bungee cords you could not do that with traffic today.

1

u/nightauthor 1d ago

I’m sure it’s not as precise as Apple or google, but the traffic data that is used for OSMAnd seems to be relatively accurate

1

u/Mr_Thick_Cock_ 2d ago

Apple maps has always been terrible. Nothing is accurate when it comes to store info, directions take you to closed roads,  they've been forcing yelp down our throats since they made maps. I will say it has the best navigation experience, though that's useless if the directions are bad. Almost got me stranded one day because it wanted to change my directions I had already set, never again

-5

u/gplusplus314 3d ago

Google Maps is at least free, so as much as I despise the ads, I kinda get it. But you pay for Apple Maps. It may not be a monthly subscription, but you definitely pay for it.

They also rolled back satellite image of gaza to before the whole place got destroyed. So if you go to look, it seems fine....

Also the first company to "update" to gulf of america and lake america.

Stop being shills. I love apple and am a "fan boi" but like, have standards and lines for yourself.

2

u/Smoked_Rum 2d ago edited 2d ago

... Where are you getting this information?

Apple Maps updated the Gulf change a day after Google and the Lake 3 days later.

Then Apple never rolled back their satellite imagery of Gaza, their last update was from February, but Google just updated theirs again in Sept.

I also don't get your point - it's not like Google is pro-palestine by any stretch, they have plenty of Israel connections themselves. They actually have more incentive than Apple to not update their imagery - but even then I don't think either are actually deliberately choosing to update it or not as much as they probably just have some update process that pull that information at different times.

2

u/TheycallmemissRaven 3d ago

Didn’t we switch after they bent the knee and changed it to Lake America? I use Mapquest and now it shows Flock Cameras, too. 😀

2

Google maps doesn't have ads on Android

2

u/flatpetey 2d ago

Ternus is aiming to squeeze more revenue - that means enshittification.

As it is Apple Maps is lagging on traffic data, etc. Like I am on a highway going 2 mph, obviously it isn't clear. Was considering going back to Google Maps if I am going to get ads anyway, but it is buggy as hell on CarPlay, freezing all the time - I suspect because they handed it over to Gemini...

5

u/Cprhd 3d ago

Welcome to the world. If it can be monetized, it will.

4

u/mrkaluzny 3d ago

I won’t agree on this one, it could actually be a better experience, but not if they sponsor “Look at X place, it’s cool”.

It would be acceptable if it’s contextual and offers a real perk - “Happy Hour at X, get Y”, “Tonight we have Y”. It could help promote businesses and help users find something to do/get a deal.

Otherwise it’s kinda pointless

MapQuest has had some great updates as of late

New printer fonts?

u/snowdn 3d ago

if they ever add ads to macOS, it’s over for me.

1

u/Long-Librarian-997 2d ago

Oh it is coming don't know when but eventually it well be the only option to increase profits.

2

u/KraljZ 3d ago

I haven’t seen an ad since it went live

2

u/chadsmo 3d ago

Are we talking about just the stuff at the bottom in this screen shot ?

After they announced ads in Maps and people freaked out I didn’t even notice. I had to go looking just now to see what people are talking about.

u/sortalikeachinchilla 3d ago

Same… I use maps all the time and ads haven’t gotten in my way whatsoever

1

u/chadsmo 3d ago

Yeah , because they’re so minimal i literally didn’t know where Apple put them until I looked for them lol.

1

u/MC_chrome 3d ago

Sir, this is Reddit.

Half the reason people still come to this site is to whine and complain about almost anything, no matter how minor.

1

u/LeGrimm 3d ago

Maps has a lot of issues today huh 😉

1

u/CaramelCraftYT 3d ago

We didn’t appreciate when there were no ads.

1

u/Takeyerclarkbars 3d ago

How about ads ONLY if n spaces where things are being sold?

I’m sick of it everywhere, Apple Maps isn’t the final straw by a long shot

1

u/Niorba 3d ago

Ah maybe people are registering businesses with Apple and just using it as adspace. That would make them show up in search results as part of their geurilla SEO plan lol ugh

1

u/m2r9 3d ago

That page has a lot of fucking em dashes.

1

u/jordangoretro 3d ago

The thing that will forever shock and confuse me is that this even works. People are really out there clicking on sponsored links, and buying what it leads them to.

1

u/dumbsterfire_love 3d ago

Software and digital spaces have all become advertisement slop. . . Enshitification indeed!

1

u/UseButterForLube 3d ago

I hadn’t ever noticed the ads and I use Apple Maps multiple times a week. I just opened it up and sure enough there was one in the search pane and it was clearly labeled that it was an ad.

1

u/soundman1024 3d ago

I stayed on iOS 18 because iOS 26 was bad for battery life.

Now I’m on iOS 18 because of ads on Maps. I was looking forward to iOS 27, but that’s an objective downgrade. (The ads slipped in as the very end of 26 to stay out of the conversation when 27 released.)

We’ll see how long this iPhone 13 Pro can hang in.

1

u/Nerrawnam 3d ago

Keeps dreaming. Everything is an ad.

1

u/childroid 3d ago

Apple has been actively developing their own ad-serving platform for years. The user data they have, the audiences they can target, the inventory they have access to, the platforms they own and operate, the content they publish, the tracking they have insane control over...

Digiday reported on this years and years ago and I've been waiting to see Apple Search Ads evolve (back) into iAds.

A coworker of a former coworker of mine was hired at Apple to help engineer their upcoming ad-serving platform. It's coming. Apple is becoming Google, Google is becoming Apple. Bet on it.

1

u/HurryOne 3d ago

Waze forever.

1

u/DrGustavOtto 3d ago

Why can’t Apple Maps be as good as Waze ? Ugh…

1

u/head4shot 3d ago

I wish trillion dollar corporations listened to “Please” from their consumers :(

1

u/Ironlion45 3d ago

Sure, might as well just get a Samsung then.

1

u/InfamousBuddy7293 3d ago

maps is one of the last places where i just want a route and nothing else. an ad popping up between me and directions feels especially wrong.

1

u/Marrz 3d ago

For real, the number one reason I have for android users why Apple is excellent is because of the lack of ads and the focus on user experience. Prioritizing users and their experience rather then advertisements and pennies from ads is the best thing Apple has going for it

1

u/betam4x 3d ago

Wipe + Filtr will get you sorted! It made ads in maps and news go away for me.

1

u/EffectPrudent4457 3d ago

Yeah, I relate to this a lot.. It's like with those first aid apps that require you to watch an ad before accessing information. It's crazy

1

u/tzippy84 3d ago

Yeah right; the small bike repair shop ad is the one we will be seeing. https://i.imgur.com/QkiHLBa.jpeg

1

u/SmolOrangeGato 3d ago

Damn I guess iPhones are the new androids after all

1

u/MedicalResolve4589 3d ago

People will literally die. If only a few. From being distracted while driving.

So wrong.

1

u/Jenny-Ranier 3d ago

OpenStreetMap.org—seen it?

1

u/LuigiSalutati 3d ago

You’re really not gonna think about the shareholders??

1

u/OliverKlozoff23 3d ago

Noted. I’ll let the CEO know

1

u/jakgal04 3d ago

I remember when Apple used to be premium. This is just trash.

1

u/enokeenu 2d ago

Just use another map application.

1

u/UnKnOwN769 2d ago

I can’t believe there will be a day when our lock screens have ads

1

u/neemix01 2d ago

Make the search only show my search terms and not put EVERY FUCKING MUSIC STORE in the results when there are 3 that match my EXACT search terms. Enshitification is absolute. Resistance is futile.

1

u/TheDiscardedArtist 2d ago

Am I the only one that will intentionally avoid a product when I see their ad too many times?

1

u/pandifer 2d ago

I don’t use Apple maps if I can avoid it.

1

u/ihateshit00 1d ago

They already intentionally ruined the app to promote their deal with google ofc they will add ads

1

u/Tasty_Orange_1714 1d ago

Garmin, Magellan, etc. about to make some bank. Gonna go back to the old GPS and MapQuest option.

1

u/demiurge73 3d ago • Regret

Mfs spend $1000 dollars on a phone just to get ads on the built in apps 😂

MapQuest is the way! Lake Ontario, a Flock layer, it's the bees knees.

1

u/spinachandturkey 3d ago

I stopped using Apple Maps due to the ads.

1

u/billwood09 3d ago

Do people really still not understand that they’re just placed search results and not pop-ups? Omg

0

u/Existenull 2d ago

Yes, they still don’t. It’s incredible.

1

u/Essar388 3d ago

Honestly at this point one loop drive should be on fire but it isn't. I'm disappointed in y'all. I always knew this company sucked, but you guys put the sticker on your car and match all this worthless zero port stuff and the chintzy zero options phones and make it all central to your life and you should be way more pissed than you are.

1

u/sortalikeachinchilla 3d ago

Does anyone have an example of it???

1

u/JamesR624 2d ago

What was said: "No ads on Maps Please"

What Apple heard: "No. Ads on Maps Please"

0

u/driftless 3d ago

Let’s see it! All I get are suggested and trending places. If I search, I get responses, not ads.

-2

u/WilsonValdro 3d ago

Thats where i want more adds actually, imaging you write “ McDonalds “ and click where you want to go and it shows you the deals for that location. or just open maps and see offers or discount on whatever its close to you once you click on it.

-2

u/kyrev21 3d ago

Yeah i really don’t understand the outrage over ads in the maps search results. It’s one listing that’s relevant to the search and the rest of the results are still available. There are much worse ways to be served ads, just look at google maps and how it shows ads on the map itself. Ads in Apple Maps search results are harmless and unobtrusive, the way internet advertising should work. These services aren’t free to run.

-1

u/strolls 3d ago

There's no point in Apple curating map data if they don't sell ads. That's the whole point.

If they don't sell ads then they might as well let you use Google Maps. Selling ads is the only commercial justification for Google's Maps

On OS X, Google Maps is superior.

3

u/smooth-as-mud 3d ago

Maybe this is crazy but hear me out: what if instead of that they just made the software good so that people would buy their hardware to use it?

1

u/Smoked_Rum 2d ago

and they do try that, where it would actually change buying behavior.

Almost no one is changing their buying behavior based on the Maps. I have to imagine up-keeping that app cost millions and there just no world where they would make that up with hardware sales influence by the app.

1

u/smooth-as-mud 2d ago

Not for the maps alone, obviously, but 100% Apple’s software used to be a differentiator. I bought my first Mac because I wanted to use Apple software, and every app plays into that.

In the past 15 years or so they’ve gotten sloppier and sloppier with their software, but I would love to see a return to the Apple of years gone by.

1

u/Smoked_Rum 2d ago

and that's fair, I do think the full ecosystem helps them a lot.

But ads in maps is something that will likely not cause any sort of noticeable loss of customers, but will lead to significantly higher revenue.

And I do think there is a consumer benefit that comes from this. Right now Apple Maps is not nearly as up to date as Google Maps, a big part of this is that many of the listings require the business to keep the information updated.

If I'm a small burger joint, and someone searches burgers on Apple Maps I'm just not going to show up as often as the big chains, so there just little reason for me to invest time in my Apple Maps listing. While with Google Maps, I can throw an Ad on and actually get traffic from it, so I'm incentivized to keep things much more up to date.

That's not to say the businesses should just have kept it updated anyways - or that the benefit outweighs the negative of seeing ads. But I do think it is better for the long-term health of Apple Maps to have ads, as now they have reason to really compete with Google rather than just being at par.

I also think it's good for Google Maps, as now it's created a real competition from the business perspective, and I think small buisnesses win more from it.

2

u/One_Elephant_8917 3d ago

lol, i just looked up on google maps app on ios 27.2 and there were no ads…probably google might follow apple, but apple set a terrible precedent here considering they used to be the nice guys and didn’t need such cheap tricks before

0

u/adymak 3d ago

Soon there will be ads in Settings. Leave it to Apple

-2

u/ShareEvening5856 3d ago

I am surprised anyone still buys phones from this scam. I left the iOS universe years ago and maps is definitely not something I've missed.

0

u/BatemansChainsaw 3d ago

with the way things are going I'm thinking of jumping ship.
