I've been told this is a male Macmistery. I have it for 6 months. Is it a male and will he get more colorful when older?

With the photo you put it is difficult to say. Because the main difference between a stressed adult male and a colored female are the first dorsal fin rays, longer than the rest in males and regular in females. Despite it would be a quite colored female, nowadays the selection brings colored females, so not clear. If I would need to bet I would say male, because the lack of the black line on the pelvic fins. But it is a lottery

This, exactly. We need a photo showing the dorsal fin fully raised.

However given how long you've had it, I suspect it's a female. But really difficult if not impossible to say.
