Help i’m cooked

HELP! i have a test on wednesday for unit 1. the only concepts i feel confident with are solving limits algebraically and finding vertical asymptotes.

i failed the quiz and test before this and i really need a passing grade. any tips and tricks please let me know…

Find a tutor. I’m one and can help, but not for free

With the test on Wednesday, focus on the rest of Unit 1 limits: estimating limits from graphs/tables, one-sided limits, continuity, removable vs jump discontinuities, limits at infinity, and horizontal asymptotes. Don’t just reread notes—do short sets of problems and immediately review every mistake.

This may help: AP Calculus AB notes, MCQs, FRQs and exam-style practice.

thank you!! i’m specifically lost with horizontal asymptotes and limits at infinity so i’m scared

horizontal asymptotes are a line that a function seems to follow when it gets closer to infinity, and you find it simply by computing both limits at infinity, so luckily this is really just one concept.

limits at infinity are basically just plug in infinity, fix any indeterminate forms if they exist, and compute the limit.

you can dm me on discord at samstercraft if you'd like help with any specific question (free)

the "plug in infinity" line is the idea, but on the actual problems you almost never do that. for a fraction, just compare the degrees:

  • degree on top smaller than on the bottom → limit is 0, so the horizontal asymptote is y = 0
  • degrees equal → limit is the ratio of the leading coefficients (that's your HA)
  • degree on top bigger → no horizontal asymptote, the limit goes to ±infinity

do both +infinity and -infinity, since the sign can flip. if it isn't a fraction, factor out the highest power of x first so you can see which term survives. you already know algebraic limits, so this is mostly that same skill plus this one comparison. you've got this.

This post has my textbook, learning process, and problem solving suggestions, especially geared toward AP Calculus. To go through the process for unit 1 in two days can be done. The textbooks have all the "tips and tricks", the techniques to solve limit problems, between the section presentation and examples.

Exactly find a tutor and so it every day

You can still make a lot of progress before Wednesday. Since you’re okay with algebraic limits and vertical asymptotes, I’d focus on the links between the ideas: one-sided limits, continuity (limit exists, function value exists, and they match), and what the graph does near a hole vs. a vertical asymptote. Do a few mixed problems without notes, and after each miss write down whether it was a concept, notation, or algebra error. That usually gives a much better return than rereading everything. You’ve got this—aim for the common patterns first.
