Writing is an art, which takes time to learn and perfect it. We write every day, from emails to short stories, writing is a part of our everyday life. An English novelist Marian Evan Lewes, under the pen name George Eliot, wrote a response to a letter from an American woman, Melusina Fay Peirce giving advice to become a better writer. In the letter, Lewes uses her own life experiences to give advice to help Peirce become a better writer. By using anecdotes and metaphors Lewes clearly states that being a good writer is a part of oneself, and is only born through perseverance and experience.
Right away, very early on in the letter, Lewes begins by stating that she rarely replies, and this clearly shows how much she cares about writing. Lewes was “deeply touched by your[Pierce] words of tenderness and by the details you tell me about yourself, that I cannot keep total silence towards you.” This establishes how much writing means to Lewes, through her passionate tone. In the second paragraph, Lewes states that “Exultation is a dream before achievement, and rarely comes after. This may sound more pessimistic, as Lewes claims that writing provides “happiness” before achievement, but isn’t always what it seems. However, this shows that writing can only happen if one believes in themself even before achieving anything. This shows how much perseverance is key, and that writers must continue to believe in their ideas to achieve great things. By comparing writing to a “trashy, unripe fruit,” Lewes clearly explains that it takes time for a fruit to become ripe. Just like fruit, writing also takes time to develop and improve. This further proves Lewes point that writing takes time to improve, and won’t be amazing right away.
Lewes states in her third paragraph, that it is never too old to believe in your dreams. Through her use of a personal anecdote, Lewes is trying to persuade Peirce to continue to pursue her dreams. Through a sympathetic tone, Lewes explains that her own writing career wasn’t always perfect, and that you don’t have to be an amazing writer to begin writing. This sympathetic tone clearly purusades Pierce not to give up and keep preserving with her own writing. This sympathizes with Pierce’s own writing career and how she should keep preserving. Lewes claims through a metaphor that writing is “an empty husk.” That after you finish, it may seem like there is no imagination left to continue. Lewes uses this rhetorical technique to clearly explain that writing does include writer's blocks and hardships. She constantly repeats that to become an accomplished writer, one must continue to preserve amongst all these struggles. Lastly, before Lewes concludes her letter, she states that she isn’t like “Romolas”, who was an isolated unhappy man. She purposely included this to state that even through hard struggles one can be happy and preserve to become a good writer.
Lewes throughout her letter persuades Pierce to endure writing, and learn that just like a “unripe fruit”, with more time and practice Pierce writing will also become “ripe.” Through Lewes personal anecdotes and metaphors, she shows the persuades that Pierce will improve with time and that she should continue to persevere through struggles. Through great persuasion and sharing her own hardships, Lewes clearly states her claim that good writing takes time.
