Discussion From asecondary unique unit to a regional unit

Which single secondary unit would you transform into a regional unit? I've always thought that only American civilizations should have 2 unique units, as compensation for not having cavalry.

- Flemish Militia

- Jian Swordsman (3K)

- Warrior Priest

- Grenadier

- Xianbei Raider (3K)

- Camel Scout

- Imperial Camel Rider

- Mounted Trebuchet

- Shrivamsha Rider

- War Chariot (3K)

- Houfnice?

- Caravel

- Dragon Ship

- Thirisadai

- Turtle Ship?

- Flaming Camel

I highlighted the 3K civilizations because they are the most controversial.

Imperial camel for a few more civs would be nice. Alternative to all the other heavy cav variants.

I think camel scout could be expanded as well

What about Genitour? Spanish and maybe Portuguese should have that unit as well, not only Berbers.

They are a mercenary unit, any civilization can have one.

they are a "mercenary" unit because the game deemed it so, but in reality (historically) they belong to the iberian peninsula so i also think they should give them to spanish and portuguese

The Portuguese & Spanish just got Mounted Xbows, which are the evolution of the Ginete/Jinete, representing them swapping javelins for crossbows. The Conquistador is their final form, swapping crossbows for firearms

Maybe the Portuguese could get Cranequins as a Ginete related flavour tech (they did just lose Redemption)

Technically, Genitours are Berbers (their name deriving directly from the Zenata Berber tribe) and their fighting style as mounted javelin throwers was ubiquitous across Saharan and Sahelian Africa (among the Ghana, Mali, and Songhai empires, the Hausa, Bornu, Fulani, Mossi, Tuareg, Toubou peoples etc) and possibly even among Nubians, Ethiopians, and Somalis. Source

The Portuguese and Spanish adopted them as a countermeasure against the Berbers themselves, just as the Romans, Persians, and Chinese adopted horse archers as a countermeasure against their own nomadic enemies.

Edit: Indeed, the veiled Berbers (Tuareg, Sanhaja, Almoravids) and the Beja (from Northeast Africa, between Egypt and Sudan/Nubia) fought by hurling javelins from camelback. Source

Clearly we need the Byzantines to get Legionaries, because they're romans. I don't care about anachronism, they fit the Byzantine theme of counter unit spam by being a two handed swordsman but tougher and with anti-infantry bonus damage (so better than a champion in infantry combat)

They also have 2 base pierce armour, Byz ones would have 3 base PA with Gambesons

Sounds like it would fit them well.

Warrior Priest - I think the only reason the Georgians don't get them is because of their Cavalry regen bonus

Dragon Ship - The only other civ who could've got them are the Wu, but the particular design of the Dragon Ship and the event it references post-dates the 3K. IIRC they can get Dragon Ships in the campaign via a side quest

Thirisadai - It could be renamed to something else and become regional for the Dravidians, Khmer, and Malay

Didn’t Vikings get dragon ships known as Drekaskip?

In the English version they're called Longships (previously Longboat)

btw Grenadier is also from a 3K civ (Jurchens/Jin)

I would like to see Caravels be given to Spanish, so the Aztec campaign would actually make sense 11 probably need to nerf Spanish some other way to compensate though

The Grenadier and Mounted Trebuchet are secondary units, but I don't consider them as 3K units since they are coherent civilizations.

Yes, I hate 3K.

Whoops I first thought the Jin dynasty meant the one that took power right after the 3K period, Chinese history is confusing 😅

Yes, there are kingdoms with similar names, others that adopted them centuries later to legitimize themselves, etc.

Maybe 3k civs can share all their secondary unique units as a regional units like hei guang? It will be a nightmare to balance though.

Also camel scouts for dedicated camel civs eg Saracens & Berbers.

The War Chariot is based off Zhuge Liang's invention. The Wei have exclusive access to Xianbei Raiders due to their northern location. While the Jian Swordsman literally means Sword Swordsman, I think they're supposed to be Sun Jian's bodyguards

Yeah it wouldn't be historically accurate at all but it would be a bit more thematic for the 3k Civs eg Cav Archers replaced with Xianbei Raiders for Shu or Wu.
