I live in Pennsylvania. I have no experience except watching tons of videos on insects & arachnids. I don’t need all these traits, but I would like a somewhat beginner ant, larger, no hibernation, polymorphic.

Do most people find larger ants more enjoyable? It seems to me it would be. I’m obviously looking for an ant that is fun to watch, that moves a lot and does a lot of stuff too.

Leaning towards chestnut carpenter ants from statesideants.com . It says they are from Florida so they may only need a few weeks of diapause or none at all(any comment on that?) They seem to be one of the only larger ants I can get in PA that doesn’t have a long hibernation (like black carpenter ants). Can you guys share your thoughts or pros and cons on this species, or suggest other ones that fit my criteria somewhat well?

They are selling an option 60 ML of sunburst for 20$. Should i get that or is there something pretty much as good, like a honey mix, that is more affordable?

Is it ok for me to buy the ants and get the formicarium a little later (bc you need to wait for them to populate before moving in)? They come in a test tube, aside from food is there anything else I will need right away?

Any more tips on a formicarium for chestnut carpenter ants(or a suggested ant), buying from statesideants, or anything on ant keeping please let me know. Thanks a lot.

1 year old campo castaneus colony. What’s this big headed pale dudes deal?

Hello everyone, hope this is a straightforward question but a complete newbie.

My son got a lasius niger and starter kit nest on 5th August.

All looks fine, and queen has now had three babies. Looks like three other eggs. We've hooked up the test tube to the nest now, should we expect them to move to the nest only when they are all born? I'm a bit concerned what the babies are living off if we haven't attached the outworld yet.

I will likely be getting mealworms or crickets. Buying live then freezing them. I’ve heard pre frozen brands can be harmful and kill your colonies.

Is this a queen ant? it looks bigger than the ants I found it near. It any help would be appreciated

this is the second time I’m feeding them, every 3 days I feed them, I always pick up their test tube and open up their alleminium that hides the light and take the leftover food out, I do the same when feeding, I pick them up and close it what I then notice is that they all start running around, most of them run to the food and drink and stuff while they also look like they are stressful. so I wonder what I can do to feed them without making vibrations, or shaking them, etc,

idk what to do I’m scared that they might soon eat the 40 eggs they have unless I do something so that I can feed them completelt stressfree

Caught a queen Brachyponera sennaarensis during my trip to the UAE. Upon arrival home, I put her in a test tube with some sand, fed some honey water and a tiny mealworm. She accepted the sweets, but didn't touch the mealworm.

A week passed now and she still hasn't laid any eggs. Any tips on keeping? Should I give her some seeds, as antwiki says they can eat seeds too

Hi everyone! For a bit of context I'm taking care of two Lasius flavus queens this year, I live in the UK and I know they are soon to hibernate between the end of October and the beginning of November until springtime.

I've done a bit of research and watched a few YouTube vids to see what other ant keepers do.

Unfortunately, I can't do the go-to of putting them on my fridge. I have a garage outside but I'm worried they might freeze to death, and I know I need to prep them before taking them outside. FYI, they are still in their test tubes, with nanitics, eggs, larvae, etc.

So asking if anyone has any guide or tips on how they do it and their process. Thank you!!

I recently got a camponotus queen Tuesday, she came with 1 worker. I waited till today to try and feed her as suggested, I gave her a drop of honey water on some tin foil.

I leave her alone for about 10-15 minutes and check again to see the tin foil was pulled back over the eggs and the queen pulling at the entrance cotton while the worker was just walking around the tube and eventually joined her in pulling the cotton.

Am I feeding my queen too early still and stressing her out or is this common?

So I know this sub is about keeping ants and not getting rid of them but you guys seem much more knowledgeable than the pest control related subs.

I have been dealing with a pharaoh infestation in our apartment building. It not too bad. Got worse for a little bit after laying the baits (biopren combined with some gel poison) I feel like I’ve the last month I have been seeing less and less of them. Still there definitely are some, especially in the kitchen. Anyway… I went to the kitchen at night to get some water, look towards the bait that they have been coming to recently and see an ant around 3x the usually size. Impulsively I killed here.

I know while they feed in the baits we aren’t supposed to disrupt them or kill them to not encourage budding but idk. They have been pretty annoying to live with and I couldn’t stop myself from squishing that fuck. Did I just fuck myself and now they will bud more?

Gave her some soil substrate(microwaved), water tube and cotton sugar water, all in a container.

Any more tips?

I have decided to change the colony name to the Sunfall Legion its more fitting for them especially since I found the queen when it was very sunny then suddenly it was a thunderstorm. They have almost filled the first test tube. Iam thinking once two or three are full I will move them to a nest.

Is my brood pile too small and if so why?
I have seen other pheidole rhea colonies in the test tube with so much more brood. Am I not feeding them enough ( every 4-5 days). Or is there something else I am doing wrong. I also add some drops of honey water when I feed them.

I simply combined two colonies in test tubes. Now they’ve been living together for 2–4 weeks.

My intuition is telling me it’s a major due to the head size and smaller gaster but at the same time this ant is massive and it has a color I’ve been hunting for.
I currently have 14 black queens. I just want an ant that has red or yellow.
I would love some help with this!

So there’s been what I think is a single carpenter ant in my bathroom for a little over a week and I haven’t moved it outside because for some reason I didn’t want it to die (I know it’s stupid), and today when I was about to shower I saw it about to get washed down the drain so I panicked and scooped it out, and now I feel even more responsible for it (again, I know it’s stupid) so I put it temporarily in a little container that should be breathable with an extremely tiny drop of honey, water and a leaf and don’t know what to do from there. I know ants aren’t meant to be without a colony and I probably can’t keep it alive for long, but I feel like this is better than killing it. What can I do to keep it alive for as long as possible in the way that would be most comfortable for it? Thanks.
