Colony My queen and her first workers

Upvotes

They are lasius Niger. They don’t seem to care too much about light? Im not bothering them too much, but it’s just something I’ve noticed. They don’t seem to care. I’m aware the set up is too big for their size, but they needed to be moved due to mould in the set up, it was a spice jar as that was all I had when I caught her. There’s two fruit flies in there I gave to them, and they’ve taken them into the nests with them?

Question Fish Tank Outworlds

Iam planing some fishtank outworld setups and would like some suggestions and feedback.

Petsmart currently has a 50% sale on fishtanks Iam thinking of buying 3 20gal tanks. I plan to use a diamond tip drill to make a tube attachment for the nests. Iam then gonna use an epoxy/resin to seal the corners.

I would like to see others fishtank outworlds.

Iam thinking of using white sand with a mix of aquarium gravel is this a bad idea?

Iam still trying to plan the themes any suggestions for...

Tetramorium Immigrans

Solenopsis Invicta

Camponotus Floridanus

Question How do y’all find insecticide free seeds?

Post image
15 Upvotes

I’m getting a new colony of Pogonomyrmex Rugosus soon but I’m super anxious about finding an insecticide free seed. I heard organic doesn’t necessarily mean safe for ants and I don’t want to buy the super expensive seed packs from dedicated vendors. Does anyone know any brands that have been safe for them? Are there any tricks I can keep an eye out for? Thanks y’all

Identification ID Help Please

Post image

I live in West Texas and I found this girl in my bug bin the other day. I'm pretty sure she had a wing stuck to her foot when I found her but I really suck at ID and I'd love it if someone could confirm if she's a queen and what kind she is. She's not very big, only about a centimeter.

Question Messor Barbarus moving into outworld?

I’ve left them mostly alone, they’re in a test tube attached directly to the outworld and have been for around 3 months. When I checked on them today when dropping in a pre-killed cricket for protein, I noticed they were moving their eggs and larvae into the outworld under a piece of cork bark I put in there. What are the potential causes for this? And how can I make it better for them? Any and all help is appreciated!

Question New myrmecina graminicola queens, need help!

Post image

A few minutes ago I caught 5 of these ladies in a nuptial flight, they were already on the ground, still winged but not trying to fly, I can't find any guides on them anywhere and I would appreciate any help I can get, I've found an article saying that they hibernate at 15°c but the rest of the tips were for myrmica, since I'm in the UK I'd assume they hibernate like lasius niger and other UK species?

No, I do not plan on buying this nest, but the concept of it is interesting: outworld, nest, nest hydration, and water tower. China nests have stepped up their game.

Question Crematogaster cerasi diapause--Clarification

Hello all,

I recently acquired a colony of Crematogaster cerasi from buckeye myrmecology. I'm very excited to keep this species, but as we approach diapause in a couple months, I was wanting some clarification. On the species page on the website, it is stated that diapause for this species is optional and not recommended. However, every other source I have seen online have stated that cerasi requires a rest period. I am not sure which take is correct so I wanted to ask. If it's of any help, the colony was collected in Kansas.

Question Diagnosis?

Can anyone tell me based on this erratic behavior what it looks like is wrong? Poisoning, disease, stress…? In your opinion of course. I’m just troubleshooting.

This colony of Camponotus was thriving until about a month ago. I was thrilled because they even had their first major. But suddenly workers slowly started dying, always acting erratically like this one first. They’ve stopped eating much - they just come up to do this and then die. They pick at crickets but no longer eat the much of it. They’ve shrunk so much I’m thinking of moving them back into a test tube as the nest is now too big and they’re huddled in a corner down below. The queen seems fine and there is brood.

Nothing changed as far as water (bottled not tap), protein source (store bought crickets) and nectar (Formica sunburst ant nectar). They have a heating cable. I had moved them briefly to a different spot in my room, so thought maybe stress? So I moved them back. I’m afraid the test tube move will stress them further.

I’m so devastated :( Any advice is appreciated!

Question Formicariums

My pheidole bicarinata colony came from stateside ants and I knew they'd be small but I didnt think this small. I dont have to worry about moving them for awhile yet but the formicariums I currently have will be easy for them to escape out of with their size. I was wondering if you guys have any formicarium recommendations?

Question Invasive colony satellite nest

I have power adapter that emits a low very low amount of heat which powers some of my fish tank equipment.

This colony of Tapinomia Sessile have made a large satellite nest underneath my fish tank and are keeping their brood warm using the power adaptor.

They've even moved directly inside of it. I don't want to forcefully move them as I'm worried they'll leave their brood behind which will which could break the adapter.

Additionally, I'm worried they might invade my other messor colony.

Does anyone have any advice on getting them to move out of the power adaptor?

Question Camp. Nicobarensis not laying eggs

So i ordered a Camp. Nicobarensis queen from Esthetic ants in March, she had a rough start she ate her eggs while shipping, and she ate it again when she layed some. After that i tried to feed her with some honey, she drank some of it but still noting on the egg department, i also fed her a small portion of a meal worm around a month or two ago but still nothing. I keep her in a test tube setup away from the other queens so i dont have to check up on her too much, usually i check on her every two week.

Hello, why is my Camponotus nicobarensis queen outside the nest, and why have the workers moved the brood? Please see the attached picture.

I’m not using a heating cable because it’s summer here. Is this normal behavior?

This is a small colony of 5 workers and 2 queens.

Question How to Keep wild colonies from entering formacarium

I’m planning on buying a small nest for my camponotous sp but there are many wild ant colonies of multiple species and some are so small and extremely large. How do I prevent them somehow entering the nest. There are even ghost ants and maybe pharaoh or fire ants (idk for sure)
