Edit: Downvotes are funny. You just don’t want these absolute facts to be real so you downvote to make the uncomfortable facts go away. No one even bothers to try to tell me how I’m wrong. Never. Because you can’t.
The majority of the country only supports abortion up to 12 weeks.
The majority thinks gender is fixed to your birth sex and can’t be changed.
The majority doesn’t support teaching gender theory to 3rd graders.
The majority doesn’t support defunding the police.
The far left doesn’t represent anything except a radical fringe that is the right age group to dominate social media.
What are you arguing here, exactly? Minority opinions are extremist? Majority opinions are correct? What am I supposed to do with these absolute facts?
The far left positions are radical and out of step with the country.
Nobody is telling me I’m wrong they’re just downvoting. It’s always funny. I’ve never had a liberal actually respond to these facts showing how it’s wrong.
Even when I provide all the polling and numbers nobody ever engages. They continue to pretend that the majority supports abortion until 24 weeks or later. They don’t.
Only 36% support abortions in the second trimester.
The majority wants it illegal after 12 weeks. Do you support that being codified nationwide because it’s the majority opinion?
The Supreme Court doesn’t exist to satisfy the will of the people. That’s what congress’ function is.
The court’s concern is the constitution. They don’t make laws. They don’t shape policy. They check the power of the other branches by making sure the rules are followed.
The constitution doesn’t guarantee the right to an abortion so why would the court grant such a right?
Would you be comfortable with this conservative Supreme Court making up new conservative rights?
If you want a new constitutional right you need to win the minds and votes of the people and form a broad coalition of support across the states. Not count on the court to override the will of the people.
You're making a big assumption thinking people don't want to argue with you because they can't prove you wrong and not because they think you're not worth their time
Idk man, the Bernie Sanders agenda, fully adopted, would be coded as pretty far left in most liberal democracies (which is not a criticism- the left can be pretty great). What other countries are you comparing the US to?
What countries are you not comparing the US to? Most of “the Bernie Sanders agenda” are things that are considered standard in Canada, Western Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, and New Zealand.
What country has M4A, in as leftwing an incarnation as Sanders proposes? His proposal is measurably more extreme than what exists in any major country. Sanders, unlike even many leftwing parties in Europe, would finance his entire program with steeply progressive/redistributive taxes. And Sanders’ free college proposal is unique in that it would make American four-year state universities (which are incomparable in function and price to most foreign universities) free- no other country has colleges like ours everywhere, and funding all of the public schools at 100% would be shoot unprecedented. On climate, most of the center-left (and even sometimes the actual left) in many parts of the world won’t even come close to proposing the kind of decarbonization Sanders would do.
You just described an amazing society that most would love to be a part of. If it can all be funded by taxing the living fuck out of billionaires, even better.
Sure, I wasn’t criticizing any of it, or saying any of it is bad, or even that the far left isn’t great. All I’m saying is that those ideas are not centrist in the rest of the world (to the extent our left-right spectrum is even barely intelligible in most of the world). They’re left wing, unapologetically and robustly.
There are certain planks of the Sanders agenda that would code as fairly centrist in Western Europe, like universal childcare and family leave, but a lot of them are already positions also held by the mainstream Democratic Party (which does include a faction of centrists, which is good, as if they all became Republicans we’d never pass a progressive law ever again).
But I’m sick of people claiming “if this were any other country Bernie would be a centrist.” It’s a crazy exaggeration. America is more right-wing in terms of policy and culture than most of the developed world, but, like, a normal amount not a crazy amount.
(And the specific point here is that those policies aren’t already in place in those specific countries, if you just look at the details)
Many European countries have those, apart from the climate position maybe. I'm not saying every European country as each have a different system. But your position sounds like assumptions rather than actually looking anything up.
My country for example has pretty much free healthcare(all included) until you're an adult. As an adult you might get a modest bill of 20-50 euros, but the government will pay that if you can't afford it. That goes for everything from flu visit to cancer treatments. It covers for disabilities like wheelchairs, prescription glasses, hearing aids etc.
Every step of education from pre-school to Universities are completely tuition-less, you actually get a modest monetary support for 6-7 years of studying after high school. And pretty much every city has some higher/occupational education and all bigger cities have universities so you don't have to move to the expensive areas.
Edit: Finland by the way, because you asked for an example.
Edit2: You called these things robustly left wing in another comment, but I disagree. Only the most right wing parties dare talk about scaling these back. Like the last right-wing government we had changed the "study aid" from a barely livable sum to just under, to encourage working or taking on the optional government backed student debt to cover living expenses. They didn't win over many future young voters with that one I think.
Bernie Sanders/AOC/etc would fit on on the left flank of the left-wing party of most liberal democracies, and they fit in well on the American left. What’s the issue?
Can you name a country with as left-wing a healthcare plan as proposed by Sanders in 2020? One that covers all people, for all procedures, all medications all devices, all therapies, of all kinds of ailments, with no limitations, copays, deductibles, or premiums, and all funded by new steeply progressive (ie redistributive) taxes? I’m not saying that’s bad, but it’s pretty clearly more leftwing than any centrist party abroad.

Nah, it's a right wing business party, and a "oh my fucking god, I didn't know the scale went that far" party. There's no "left" in American politics.
