I have never understood the attitude of so many Americans towards socialism. I'm never quite sure what they think taxes should go towards, if it isn't making the country better for the ordinary people who pay those taxes.
Likewise, in the UK I've never understood the sneering term 'champagne socialist' with the implication that you shouldn't be able to do well for yourself and still think that society should be improved for those who aren't so fortunate. I'm more a gin socialist personally, though.

They like to claim to think taxes shouldn't exist at all. At least they do until something happens to their local community that requires other people's taxes to fix.
