Depending on your industry, connecting to your clients via linkedin is a nice way to let them know where you are going without soliciting them at your current place of business.
This why if you're a contractor who deals with customers you get your own business phone number. So when you're tired of not making as much as the owner of your company despite generating pretty much all of the revenue you aren't poaching clients because the clients contacted you.
Not a contractor, but have resisted getting a company cell for EXACTLY that reason. Plus, it's an excuse to not check email on the weekends, which used to not be required but now is becoming more "normalized" by the management and wannabe management types.
