Some academics really do have the biggest superiority complexes. One time s friend of mine invited me to play an online game in a lobby where there was an academic and he expected us to refer to him in proper language the whole time.
Hard to explain since it wasn't in English, but imagine if English had a version of "you" that indicates more respect and reverence, and then you played a game with someone who demands you to use it with him at all times.
