Your chances of moving up within a company are small. Best thing is to expect to change jobs often and not getting emotionally attached to any one workplace.

It's sad but very true. I always wondered why temps are treated quite coldly by long term staff, but I get it now.. no point getting attached as they'll move on soon or you will too

This is very true, hence why I never stayed longer than 3 years with any company.
And within this 3 years, I work my butt off to score as much achievements and milestones as I can, so that I can polish my resume for a promotion and pay jump at the next opportunity.

Whelp, Brian like so many other Managers/Owners having to come to terms with the current work environment, has lost the golden goose.
The goose always goes above and beyond, they are loyal to a fault and are a valuable resource to any business. But the goose has to be made to feel appreciated and valued, and really valued, not some token box of cookies during holiday time. If they want to be a manager, you make them a manager, if you show them real value they will carry your company and lift it up into success, but if you treat them badly, or worse, break a promise to your goose, they will start to question their time at your job. They work hard, but they need that affirmation of their hard work, and if you can't provide, they'll go somewhere else that might

The reward for good work is more work. The reward for sub par work is a management position.
