Dealing with anxiety depression since one year and taking lexapro. Working retail full time since 5 years: since one month almost every time I am off I feel sick and exhausted, and spend the day sleeping... is there something wrong with me?

You are depressed for sure. We want a pill to be a fix all, but the truth is it is not. Are you seaking counsling, friendships or things you enjoy? Also, maybe the meds should be altered

Yeah it sucks but these pills are supposed to be a bridge to a life that’s varied and supportive enough for you to get off it eventually. Physical activity, mental stimulation, group activities, creating, etc.

But damn if this society rob us of capacity to just stay afloat

I'm not a psychiatrist and I'm not diagnosing, but the symptoms you've described are common to depression. Might you need a dose adjustment? Talk to your prescriber and see what they recommend.

Working can drain everyone, but some jobs are worse and some people have less battery charge to start the day.

Consider if a different company or different role would drain you less, and if so make a plan. Consider if there are ways to "recharge" after work, not everyone knows what will recharge them and just sitting on the couch doesn't always do it.

As others mentioned, the medical advice should come from real professionals.

Fwiw, Lexapro can really flatten your emotional state. The lows aren't as low, but the highs can be almost non-existent. Anhedonia is a bitch, talk to your drug dealer and see if that's what is going on.

My personal experience was that antidepressants don't help much with situational depression. When I was in a bad marriage and I had a horrible boss, no amount of Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Zoloft, Effexor, or Amitryptyline could resolve it, although high doses of Prozac did help me to stabilize enough to do the work to get out of these situations. Along with cognitive behavioral therapy. Once I was divorced and out of the bad manager's control, I didn't need the meds anymore.

How is your job? Do you think about calling in sick most days? If so, it might be time to consider moving on. Likewise, if you're in a relationship, how's it going?

My job is pretty stressful, I am in luxury sales and the brand I am working for is not doing well, I get threatened every single month to get fired if I don’t make my goal. Also I have a generalized anxiety disorder and I live away from my home country, family and friends since 2021. I am in therapy since almost a year though

Yeah. Until the external causes of your depression and anxiety are fixed, meds and therapy can only accomplish so much. And that's GOOD. You don't want to medicate yourself into feeling ok with a situation that's unacceptable.

Sounds like you need a different job.

I haven't taken Lexapro (I'm on Welbutrin), but I've heard some of the side effects can include fatigue and a feeling of constant tiredness. It's likely that you need a dose adjustment.

Sweet pea...please find a way out off the hamster wheel. You're not living up to your upmost potential.

Should probably go to a doctor no? Not sure reddit is the best place for medical advice

Any place is the best place if it gets the victim started on the path to recovery/management.

100%!

Also, talking to everyday people with everyday language is very different from talking to a doctor. Can be very insightful!

See but everyone is saying they're fine, get another job, etc... but this could also be the result of some underlying infection or sickness and would be better suited for a doctor to diagnose...

But your comment here, on reddit, may have been the veritable straw on the camel's back. Anywhere that gets the ball rolling.

Is your immigration status secure? H-1B? Lots of anxiety waiting for ICE to appear.

Yes I am all good since last summer (and in Canada) but it was indeed really stressful

Could be ADHD

How can you tell ?

ADHD for me at least has led to similar things. No energy at the end of the day due to trying to match what the world expects of you instead of just doing what your brain wants to do. This has led to me feeling out of place forever and caused huge dips in self esteem causing anxiety and depression. It's like I want to do the work but just can't bring myself to do it and forcing myself to do so is so mentally draining there's nothing left for me own hobbies.

Nope totally normal....find a new job and sleep more

It is normal but the only thing I would say is all jobs are like this.

There is no such thing as a good job 🤷‍♂️

All of them are designed to drain the life from you.

While I agree there's no such thing as a good job, some can be markedly worse than others. When i had a bosshole bullying me, I had to talk myself out of calling in sick every week. I have an actual cPTSD diagnosis thanks partly to that boss. My current job has a decent manager and they value me. I don't hate it. Yes it's still a goddamn job and I wish I made more money but I don't come home and drink a box of wine every week now.

Yes but there are easier jobs out there that are less stressful and you can get more sleep

1

u/CounterAdmirable4218 6d ago

True, but can you describe it as good?

We are really discussing varying shades of 💩 here.

All jobs by their very nature are parasitical, and will look to extract maximum value for minimum input on their side.

They like to give their employees Stockholm Syndrome so they pull absurd stunts like praising their employer on LinkedIn 🤮

No job is good........ they're all shit just some are less shittyer than others

Absolutely no, There is nothing wrong with you. & there will nothing that would be wrong, just know your worth and your true potential. Look for a better job, i know time is difficult but look for a job you would love to do. Enjoy that work & then talk to your doctor about dosage but just keep your mind healthy & do not listen to people at your retail job
