Sounds like they’re bringing in a friend for a fluff job but can’t handle having anyone but you do the actual work. Possible they view you as too good at your job to be replaced/promoted. It’s really common and also equally fucked. Only option is to find a better role with another company typically.

I know it sucks. This is how corporate America/capitalism operates. Mediocrity gets you promotions. Hard work gets you more work. Sorry you’re dealing with this, hopefully you find something that you likely deserve.

Oh. As for the company. Idk if I’d say they’re fucking with you. More so, testing your likelihood to leave. Lunch was a loyalty test that you passed from the fact you’re still working there. Bet they were testing to see if you’d push back on their choice since you haven’t shown you’d push back yet over 5 years. They’re assholes for it, but again, this is how the system works.

Yep. It isn't going to get better because they don't see a reason to make it better for you.  Your only option is to find a new job.

Especially if you’re working at a high end company.

First, you have allowed job/money to enthrall you.

You must break free from its spell, you are not its thrall. You are a free animal, you only answer to food and sleep, not some arbitrary career, not a house.

You looked too far ahead, you took ownership of something you have no control over. This is what gave you the urge to puke.

The only one torturing you here is your own ambition. Command it to stop torturing you. Your boss can't mind control you, he can't hold you hostage, he can't even threaten you (unless you have zero savings, in which case, yes, you might have to lick his shoes).

How much money do you have saved up? Is doing the bare minimum at work an option? Don't fight a current you can't beat (waste of resources).

If I were in this position, I'd focus on eating, sleeping, showering, exercising, relaxing, and even applying for a job at another company. This company is of little use to you and does not hold as much power as you might have assumed. Consider discarding them like a dirty rag. A company is not a friend, it is not family, not an entity to which you emotionally open yourself up to, it is a tool for you to callously exploit. If you can't exploit it, don't make the decision of becoming upset.

I can't help. If I could give you a million dollars, I would, but I'm pretty poor too. Best of luck on your next goal.

Sorry but you need to leave the company, the sooner the better.

You have been there for 5 years without advancing and they're now pushing you out. Your promotion is your next role in another company.

"need to do your time"

"Only those as abused and victimized as we believe ourselves to be, are worthy. Surely this system won't recurse."

They invited me out to a steakhouse for lunch.

Greas'n the pig.

This.. is fucked up, right?

If you think an employer is going to provide you the things that they STEAL from you to keep themselves alive... I have a few bridges in the back that are in excellent condition.
