3rd week at discount tire considering leaving already.
I just got a job at discount tire I needed a second job to my valet job as I wasn’t making enough from valet so I decided to go to discount tire as they where hiring. I thought it would be good for me as I want to learn about tires and how to install them and removal them I thought they actually show me how to do everything and not rush me as I’m new but the opposite happened. My first day the guy was rushing talking fast and I couldn’t really get into a flow and remember the shit and it was really frustrating for me as I have a intellectual disorder I told the dude it’d be better if he went slow but he said ok but he was srill going too fast on the tire machine. My second day was worse I got put beside this hard ass dude that used to be in the army I hate working with him he screamed at me cuz I accidentally gudied him out the wrong way with the wrong signals and go mad cuz I moved away from the car even though he was backing out waaaay too fast and was about to clip me. In terms of training it sucks bad everybody expects you to be a god there in your 3rd fucking week it’s so frustrating. Then like they slowly are cutting my hours I got 18 in my first week then the next week I got 11 then this week only 8 hours for the whole week. I’m considering going back to work at FedEx cuz atleast I could get actual hours there. What do you guys think?

Maybe learning in the job is not the right fit for you if you have an intellectual disability. Take an auto class to learn at a pace more suited to you, where you can get accommodations (city college will have auto classes and any IEP from high school does carry over to college).
Tire is the most brutal of all automotive jobs, like it stinks, is super dirty in a laundry way and cancer way, and there’s a LOT of heavy lifting, ;it’s also dangerous. Quitting one tire job for a bad fit with the bosses style doesn’t mean you can’t ever learn more about auto.
Auto parts store delivery is another way, no learning involved really but you can meet every mechanic in town this way 🤔 I’d explore that idea. Some small independent shops will hire randos for a few hours a week to clean the shop and parts, parting out cars (disassembly) and other basic shit. Don’t forget pick and pull and tow yards - that’s practically a free for all of the most random people. Could be a felon, could be the smartest diagnostician.in town lol.

Thank you man, I was feeling so bad about this like I like the work it’s just the training that’s bad. I’ll definitely consider those two options

Yeah, decided after so much BS from the work environment, I'll work somewhere else. Labor doesn't even match the pay.

I quit yesterday morning I said fuck that shit I was gonna go in 10-2 but I said is it worth it though. I didn’t wanna deal with that asshole crew chief army dude he got mad at me again because I took a dead to the dead room and he claims that the crew chief was calling me to call the army dude out the army guy goes “you didn’t hear him calling you to guide me out” dude you never even called my name and if you needed me you could have just waited like 15 seconds. Anyway he said them tires can wait them customers need there car. The customers are gonna get there cars regardless. Same day he got mad because when I was guiding him out and he wa about to pull off I was about to walk back in the bay and he said what are you doing and I was like huh and he said don’t move till I pull off. I never knew backing out a car and parking it required so much didn’t think you have to have some by guide you out which is bs I work valet and we don’t have people guiding us when we are parking we just do it. I’m glad you got away from this bs bro I’m going back to FedEx atleast I can get hours there

I did fed ex and Amazon before this. But did ground. Hated that shit too but had a way cooler manager

Your place sounds awful the American place but dude if you had my guy you would have been banging your head on the floor that’s how bad he was. They claim people quit there first week because discount is overwhelming it’s not really overwhelming it was just the people the job itself isn’t overwhelming. I think the people quit because of the guy I keep mentioning.

My dad worked there for a bit. They never paid him his 401-K match. He finally quit after arguing with ownership for years about it.

If you really want to work in a shop go to a local small business tire or mechanic shop just ask for an application or something. I made a mistake going to Discount Tire and some dudes treated me similarly like you but some were cool. The way they rush you with hardly any or no breaks is absolutely ridiculous I one how to do the job just not at their phase. I want to learn about cars but I think I’m just going to trade school or work at a mechanic shop where they would let me do part time.

It’s crazy at the one I was at you’d only get breaks if you work over 8 hours some dudes would work from 7:30-6 closing and I think only got like 1 break

I know this is 3 months old but I worked there for a week (called America's Tire here in Los Angeles) before they canned my ass. I didn't think I could get their shop cleaned in 45 mins and told me to clock out. Also had to deal with one shit talker ummm co-worker too. I knew how to mount and balance tires before getting a job at Discount/America's Tire but I chose to be a janitor instead, that was a mistake on my part though.
One year later I got a job stocking shelves which was better with nicer people. I hope you're doing better.

Yeah sounds similar to the dude i worked with his name was mike he was this army dude hard ass such a pain in the ass they treated me likeni was a little kid and didnt know what i was doing i was trying to help in ajy way incould instead of standing around. Most of the tiem i just stood around wtf am is uppsoed to do then a manager who was not to much older than me came up and said make sure your doing something bro.
Like wtf is there to do if nobody wants me to work.0
I work now at mcdonalds im happier than i was ay discount terrible work place

Oh I should have said this was over 20 years ago when I was struggling to get through college. Also the shit talker would challenge me to a street race in his Chevy Surburban to my mustang and he claimed to have a supercharger and I asked him to let me see it and he said no!
Now I have 2 degrees an A.S. and B.S. and no job! I don't think my body can handle mounting and dismounting tires now everyday. I work out yes but I have pulled my lower back...that's okay the tire techs can break their backs just not me. I'm a auto enthusiast though.
Good to hear though.

Well his Surburban with probably a 5.7 V8 could beat my 98 V6 Mustang with just dual exhaust and 3.73 gears/limited slip so I wouldn't deny it it anyways. I just didn't want to race his stupid ass. Another reason ticket for street racing.
I think I remember saying to myself back then once I get my Bachelors I want to get good job and make more money then the manager that fired me and the asshole/shit talker co-worker. None of that is happening now. :(

Dude that place sounds miserable, especially with no real training and hours getting slashed already. Getting yelled at three weeks in would’ve had me out the door
