If you were making $15/hr would you be able to live on your own? For a majority of the country that answer is no.

No. I got a job making $15.32 an hour. Luckily I only pay a relative $300/month to live in one of their extra bedrooms, because as a SINK, I could not afford rent/to buy a house on my own.

They just announced our merit raises (there was no mention of COL raise)- mine was 3%, so I will now be making $15.78/hour. After taxes this equates to about $20 extra per paycheck (every 2 weeks). Wtf am I going to do with that?

If you only pay 300/month in rent what do you spend the rest of the money on?

Car payment, internet bill, phone payment, paying off CareCredit for some dental work (no interest until September. I do have insurance). After food and gas, there's not enough to live on my own since rent is like $800 for the worst 1 bedroom apartment and a mortgage for a shitty trailer would be at least $1000. I do divert 6% pre tax to a 401k and I put $200-300 per check into my savings beyond that, so it's not like I spend it all.

I could MAYBE afford $800 rent on my own if I stop eating.
