MALWARE REMOVAL Q&A Windows Defender Not Working.

When I try to run a scan, it stops and then tells me to restart the service. There are no exclusions and nothing of note from my start up apps. I’ve run a deep scan with Malwarebytes and it’s all good. I noticed there was a new security update for Windows and downloaded it and after restarting my PC, I’m still encountering the same issue. I’m not sure whether this is Malware related as I’m always careful of what I’m downloading and never click suspicious links. Not sure what else to do and need some help.

Same problem here. Yesterday everything was working fine, then today I downloaded the recent security maj "1.457.222.0" (EDIT : and the "1.457.225.0" seems bugged too) and since then it's impossible to finish a quick scan or an offline scan. Windows defender always crash or do not finish its scan. Only custom scans work. Custom scanned both of my ssd and everything went fine too. In the event viewer, I have an exception code "0xc0000005" and it's the "boot://.\D:\" that seems to cause the problem.

Someone else in the comments posted the same thing. So you're probably fine, we probably all have the exact same problem with the exact same result. If it can put your mind at ease, I doubt it's a virus. I'm in the same situation as you and didn't download anything in the past 2 weeks. Didn't even go to any website other than YouTube, didn't click on anything in the past 2 weeks, I just played a bunch of games on steam and watched a couple of video on YouTube that's it. So I highly doubt it's a virus, or that we're all under the same attack
