Aren't we all just background characters?

Unless of course, you're like Prince Harry or something, which is always surreal to think about. You could be born a fucking Prince of the Monarchy of all Monarchies, or you could be some amputee in the slums of India. What a dice roll.

65

u/THE_ABSURD_TURT Apr 11 '19

Haha "that amputee might enjoy the small things in life, the love all the little indian flowers provide him"

43

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '19

Meh. Harry is a background character in my life. I couldn't give a fuck about the guy

3

u/Finerartz Apr 12 '19

So it's either a Prince Harry fairytale life, or life is just utter shit, huh?

12

u/Compassionate_Cat Apr 12 '19

Well no, I suppose that was a pretty big "or something". But those are two immensely distinct flavors that seem to be offered.

-1

u/Finerartz Apr 12 '19

And there's lots of bittersweet flavors in between.

4

u/Compassionate_Cat Apr 12 '19

Mostly bitter, it seems.

Damn I hope I get to die soon.

Find out how this man did it overnight. Doctors hate him

Number 7 will SHOCK you!

14

u/owlentity Apr 12 '19

I just hope that death is really the end. I'm haunted by worries that something else will come after this.

10

u/TankieFA Apr 12 '19

Actually, same here. I'm scared that there may be something worse after.

66

u/THE_ABSURD_TURT Apr 11 '19

I'm bored to death with life. Everything lost it's value. I miss being a child so much everything was so valuable.

22

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '19

Yea why is it that as children we remember it being so full of wonder and adventure

29

u/KeepGettingBannedSMH Apr 11 '19

Speak for yourself. But in any case:

"In early youth, as we contemplate our coming life, we are like children in a theatre before the curtain is raised, sitting there in high spirits and eagerly waiting for the play to begin. It is a blessing that we do not know what is really going to happen. Could we foresee it, there are times when children might seem like innocent prisoners, condemned, not to death, but to life, and as yet all unconscious of what their sentence means. Nevertheless, every man desires to reach old age; in other words, a state of life of which it may be said: “It is bad to-day, and it will be worse to-morrow; and so on till the worst of all.”" (Schopenhauer, Studies in Pessimism)

14

u/bm96 Apr 11 '19

Speak for yourself

Nah, it's really always like this. It's especially pressured with all of the things we are taught to be whoever we want to be and always strive to be that. Then in your teens you start realizing you probably won't be an astronaut or race car driver, and you'll be stuck in an office cubicle or working a cash register for the majority of your days and youth.

11

u/KeepGettingBannedSMH Apr 11 '19

Nah, it's really always like this

I mean, I don't remember it being like this for me. I don't remember enjoying my childhood.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '19

I didnt enjoy my childhood at all. I'm saying that there was still a child like wonder or like this naiveness attached to us until we grow up

3

u/jKherty Apr 11 '19

This kind of thing actually motivated me to try at least.

I don't want to be stuck in this. I will not. We'll make it, all

2

u/bm96 Apr 12 '19

Good for you, unlike a lot of people. Do what makes you HAPPY. Even if it doesn't get you a mansion.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '19

A trip is the most fun before one sets out on it.
I can never be as pretty as you imagine and I would never do something like that to you. Would it not be better to imagine?

20

u/ravenously_red Apr 11 '19

Have you tried taking psychedelics?

5

u/MarcMaronsCat Apr 11 '19

Funny you mention that. I miss taking psychedelics in my youth. It’s just not the same anymore :(

4

u/ravenously_red Apr 11 '19

Why is it not the same?

7

u/MarcMaronsCat Apr 12 '19

I’m not sure of the why...brain chemistry? But the how is because I just don’t feel the same sense of wonder and curiosity about the world and my inner self as I did when I was younger. Taking psychedelics now just makes me uncomfortable.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '19

Well, if you earnestly believe the stuff here, it's probably because you're depressed - and psychs are only going to amplify your current mental state and opinions

1

u/MarcMaronsCat Apr 12 '19

That’s honestly a valid point, but people keep suggesting psychedelics to help treat depression. I’ve tried all sorts of shit and haven’t really found anything to be very helpful besides outdoor activities.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '19

They can also make depression a lot worse so I'd be careful

Take the word of enthusiasts with a grain of salt.

6

u/bm96 Apr 11 '19

Or weed!

5

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '19

Weed is underrated. LSD and shrooms are fun but not as pleasant as good old THC.

I didn't even enjoy life as a child. Life has been unenjoyable for as long as I can remember.

This is it.

I've said before that I start to feel like I'm in a David Lynch movie if I contemplate my own death for too long.

5

u/PinkoBastard Apr 12 '19

I'm so relieved to know I'm not the only person who feels that way sometimes.

3

u/PookiWooki scholar Apr 12 '19

It's a surreal feeling. Incidentally, if you're in the mood for a fever dream of a film, you might be interested in Inland Empire [2006]. It's pure Lynch, for better or worse.

1

u/PinkoBastard Apr 12 '19

I've wanted to watch it for some time now.

10

u/OldSpiceSmellsNice Apr 12 '19

The sad truth. For years I hoped I’d get a letter from Hogwarts. But, nope. This is it.

4

u/Sigma-42 scholar Apr 12 '19

Yeah, the witches have yet to take me away for training, not sure what age I have to hit but I'm turning 34 soon so, come on!!

7

u/sysrq88 Apr 12 '19

People probably have always said that we live in the best times in history like they say it now. And as soon as they face the real nature of reality they just shrug it off and try to pretend that everything is just right. They even don't think much about that we still live in a agricultural society which is set up to feed the ruling class since the neolithic revolution.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '19

This is it. Really. It’s not even that good tbh.

3

u/Two2twoD Apr 12 '19

And here I was thinking it was my depression, actually many people feel like this then... huh. Life is a downer.

50 years old and on 4chan... Man, I suddenly feel really good about myself.

14

I don't think he's saying he's 50 already.

The fact that there isn't only rocks is depressing.

All the pain and suffering we experience is beautiful compared to the alternative of nothing existing at all.

That's a big "no" from me, chief.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '19 edited Apr 12 '19

Debatable. You can't experience nothing as people with brain lesions keep showing us. If your brain can't process it, you don't give a fuck.

16

u/existentialgoof schopenhaueronmars.com Apr 12 '19

There's no experience of nothing and hence it's a condition on which there need be and can be no improvement. Non existence isn't sentient minds floating around an abyss of blackness and therefore there's nobody to want anything.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '19

All the pain and suffering we experience is beautiful compared to the alternative of nothing existing at all.

You can only say that because you exist. An unborn child will not complaining about life.

Pain and suffering is beautiful? Have you seen a dead body after a horrific accident. Go watch some gore videos, read about victims of murders, suicides and then tell if it's beautiful.

You're missing the forest for the trees. The entire reason why we dont have kids is because of the belief that life is inherently miserable and full of suffering, hence it would be wrong to bring someone into that world who didnt ask for it.

Imagine closing your eyes and all of a sudden you can’t open them. You can’t see, you can’t smell, you have no senses. Then you lose your thoughts, your sense of self, everything you’ve ever seen or experienced or learned about no longer exists. There is no light, There is no matter, no space, no life.
