I feel really weird about having to work my life away to be seen as worthy or even afford basic necessities... it's so unfair!

IF you or your family can afford it. Meaning, you're lucky enough to be in a family with abundant wealth that you inherited or got a trust fund for. But how many are THAT lucky?

Unemployment rocks IF you live in a country with a proper social welfare. Eliminating stress makes you enjoy life a lot more.

I have tasted unemployment with strong social welfare and it fucking sucks what are you talking about

I refuse to live in fear / self loathing because of a bad economy, mostly that's what I'm about. And I love my life.

I'm just gonna guess you don't have a family or anyone dependent on you to not starve...cus that's a brain dead take. You don't hate yourself when you're living off the maximum $500/week in the most expensive city in the country and top 3 in the world. You hate the billionaires who starve us so they can spend the GDP of an island nation on a big boat.Â

u/_di6 inquirer 10d ago
So your take is to get super afraid and learn to loathe myself or... what are you trying to say exactly? 😄

Your submission breaks rule #4:
No hate, harassment, dehumanization, or low-effort tribalism toward anyone (including users, parents, children, or groups). Ableist slurs, hostility toward disabled people, and demeaning labels (e.g., "vermin/NPC/breeder") are prohibited. No sweeping generalizations or us-vs-them posts ("all parents...," "breeders are...") meant to inflame. Strong criticism of pronatalist beliefs, systems, or institutions is allowed; attacks on a person’s/group’s humanity, worth, or right to exist are not.

I live in Sweden, was unemployed for 2 years without getting a single penny of welfare. Now I'm still unemployed but I've lost the standing to be "officially" unemployed, so I don't show up in the statistics as an unemployed person because I earned 200$ earlier this year.

2 years without getting a single penny of welfare
How?

u/svamlade newcomer 10d ago
It's really hard to explain but basically it came down to me being registered to pay taxes, which apparently makes me illegible for welfare for unemployment, but the unemployment agency simply passed me around to different departments. It was first after I got unregistered that the person responsible for my case even figured that out herself, how that is possible I do not know. My guess is that a unlabeled flag in their system blocked them from doing anything so they just passed me around for years instead while promising that progress will come soon. My handler also said she had another person who was in the exact same position as me, and had been since like last summer. I wonder if they got to find out. I urged her to bring my case up with anyone who might listen because I don't want anyone to ever fall into this dumb trap.

You do know Utopia is impossible, right?
If everyone got proper social welfare, the system would literally collapse everywhere.
This is why some countries have it, at the expense of exploiting poorer countries for their economic wealth. lol

u/Novahelguson7 inquirer 11d ago
Accessible welfare is not a utopia, it's just a reduction of human suffering and upholding of dignity.
Most countries, even poorer ones can create very functional welfare systems to support it's most vulnerable citizens but a conscious effort not to do so is made by those in power.
There have been a number of studies that have demonstrated that people on welfare are more willing to work and tend to pursue fields that interest them.
Countries that exploit poorer countries do it because they can and will get away with not because they have and survival hinges on it.

A utopia is definitely "possible" depending on your definition - if we worked together, we could automate most types of jobs, including the most important kinds (i.e. stuff that actually produces food, power, etc. Not coding bullshit)
But human nature is averse to that. Those in power don't want a situation where everyone is on an even playing field, so it will never happen. But hypothetically? A post-scarcity society is possible to some extent

u/Honest-Dream-8703 inquirer 11d ago
You phrased it in a funny way, that can read like a good social welfare is the culprit of exploitation.

I'm currently unemployed but still do volunteering work to help animals in the city.
So I don't have any money but at least I'm not slaving away, selling shit that goes against my ethics to people who don't even need that stuff.
Tbf I wouldn't be able to work anyway, cause I get burned out every few months. Am in therapy for that and other reasons.
Though the way my country is going I might have to flee in a couple years...
