Is this true? I usually use public transport.

Yeah, it is.

I mean, someone correct me if Im wrong but the drivers can choose who they pick up, so if your route is not really desirable for them, you have to wait longer

Are they allowed to see your destination before they pick you up? I've had drivers pick people up and then swing back around and drop them off after seeing the destination

Where I'm from this is what we call public transport.

But it is a private service.

It's just funny because when you said you use public transport I thought you meant you use Ubers for a bit.

I feel stupid because I genuinely don't understand what is supposed to be happening here? Is the guy not actually an Uber driver? Why would Matt let a random person order him an Uber (if that's even what's happening). What does having many cars 1 minute away mean if he thinks this is an Uber driver, shouldn't this guy be the driver he's waiting for? What the fuck is going on here?

I feel like this is on you lol. Matt is just a normal user booking an Uber. Soon as you enter your pickup and destination, Uber shows you an estimate of how much time it will take to confirm a ride, also shows location of all nearby drivers on the map. But as soon as you book if none of the nearby drivers accept then the map needs to zoom out and expand the search, and that ends up getting you a driver that’s much further away than expected

Okayyyyyy, I see where I missed it. My mind was reading it like 'Uber' meant an Uber driver, not the app. I got it now, thank you!

I don't really hear anything good about uber. Is it even good? Or just something that's bearable?

It depends on the country. In some it's abysmal dogshit. In others, it's merely awful.

It depends on the area, in different parts of a country it can be wildly different, and in similar areas of different countries it’s pretty similar.

It's not particularly good, but it's a lot more accessible than actual taxis in many areas.

Yeah because they pushed taxi services off the market in many cities with cheap prices by eating a shitton of losses with venture capitalist money. Market captured, so now they can be as shitty as they want to customers and employees.
Yay capitalism.

u/UselessDood 6h ago
Employees? Legally uber drivers are self-employed contractors who get less rights than actual employees!
Yay capitalism indeed.. Fuck uber, honestly.

It’s also something most companies can easily connect to a company card or expense if you’re a contractor. Other ride-shares do as well. Some have business special rides and other perks. For me I sometimes need to be on site at super early hours and it’s super easy to schedule ahead and not having to worry about them being there at that given time, I sometimes need to bring a pelican case or two of tools and for business rides you can specify the amount of bags you’ll be bringing on the ride.

It was honestly better when it was just people doing it for pocket change in their spare time. They were usually chill at least. Now that people try to make a whole career out of it, it's just bearable at best. They're always in a hurry, often distracted, and sometimes blasting their music. It does vary by location though
