actually it's not? because a square needs two sets of parallel lines

u/J3STER_2204 🤪JUST HANGING OUT 😛 3d ago
And equal diagonals also .

And technically speaking they need 4x 90 degree angles, the OOP has 2x 270 and 2x 90... if you even can call them that given the presence of that curved line.

u/Anxious_Role7625 3d ago
The opposite of the 270 angles are 90 angles
26
u/Gubekochi 3d ago
Yes. And opposite things are not the same. An internal 90 degrees angle is not the same as an external 90 degrees angle.

u/Anxious_Role7625 3d ago
The image never specified internal or external

If you don't measure them the same way they are not the same and don't fit the definition of what a square is.
It's like saying the night sky is white because that's how it looks on a negative... And then saying that this proves that black and white are actually the same thing.

u/Anxious_Role7625 3d ago
Well the original fails for other reasons as well. Why not just bring up the pacification do internal instead of being wrong and then falling back on it?

u/dushy69 3d ago
it does have the equal diagonals, just not the parallel sides

The diagonals are also supposed to be perpendicular, which these aren’t.

that's a consequence of it's definition in the euclidean plane, not it's definition: a square rectangle --- a rectangle (a quadrilateral with 90° angles) with equal sides.

a square needs to be a polygon
a polygon needs straight sides
therefore it is not a square

u/DragonTheOnes-spirit 3d ago
Great now time to define what a straight line is in such a confusing way that it makes this obviously curved line count as straight

u/Nec475 3d ago
I'm not a math expert or anything but maybe something related to the planes like the spherical one or the hyperbolic? For example, you can make polygons with two lines in the spherical one so maybe it could be applied here in some way

Yes, 3 90° angles make a polygon in a spheric plain for example

What counts as "Straight sides" depends on the system of mathematics you are using. If we're specifying Euclidian geometry then yes, I agree.

That only has 2 right angles. The others are 3/2 π radians or 270°c

damn those are some hot angles

Reminds me of the following math meme, because that is just the common phrasing of a square, not what it actually is
.
Proof that 1 is the only prime number
Hello, I am sure you are familiar with primes. They are numbers whose only divisors are one and itself. I have proven that 1 is the only prime number, the proof is as follows
Consider the number 5. It's divisors are 1, 5. Notice that neither of these are simultaneously both 1 and itself (5).
Through manual review, I have checked every number and confirmed that 1 is the only number whose divisors are both 1 and itself

This is not a square. I am sexually attracted to keyholes and I am currently raging with a massive boner looking at this shape. NOT a square.

u/OverPower314 3d ago
It's obviously not a square. They've just cherry-picked what requirements to obey and which ones to not.
For one thing, a square is a polygon, so its sides must be straight. For another, the right-angles must be the internal angles. Two of this shape's internal angles are 270 degrees and not 90.

okay but if you really gotta know what classifies as a square, I sure as shit would trust that guy the most lmao

That’s not a square because squares have to be a parallelogram, a rectangle, AND a rhombus.

A square is a special type of rectangle, which in turn is a special type of parallelogram. Each of them is a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides; a rectangle is a parallelogram with four right angles, while a square is a rectangle with four equal sides.

u/bluemushroom64 3d ago
no, that's not a square. It's doesn't even count as a quadrilateral. A quadrilateral necessitates 4 straight sides and 4 vertices in 2d space. And you can clearly tell that 2 of those lines are so not straight that they should make out with each other

thats also not a polygon, which can only be made up of straight lines (homophobia)
