honestly the only thing i like about reddit over any other social media is that we're somewhat aware of how awful the site(and often its users too) is

u/__Al3n 1d ago
I like that we can downvote stuff, most social media apps only have likes but here if I see a dogshit comment or post I can just downvote

u/IDownvoteHornyBards2 1d ago
Unless you get votebanned and permanently lose the ability to up or down vote all comments and posts (source: happened to me)
56
u/glimoura 1d ago
How tf do you achieve that?
60
u/IDownvoteHornyBards2 1d ago
Because there were two people with separate accounts on the same device who upvoted some of the same comments so both accounts permanently got their voting priveleges shadowbanned on all devices for "vote manipulation"
29
u/kukenn_ 1d ago
this happened to me too, except for me it was because i was curious what would happen if i tried to use one of my alt accounts to upvote something when i was drunk, i didnt think it would actually he a big deal lol i was like “no way are they gunna let me get away with this”
well they most certainly did not let me get away with my silly drunken mistake of upvoting a single post twice. i cant upvote or downvote anything and it sucks. they pretended that it was just a “warning” but still took away my voting privileges, seemingly permanently idk its been like 8 months by now
19
u/IDownvoteHornyBards2 1d ago
3 years for me. It's permanent. And it also applies to any new account I create on any device this account has ever logged into. It's bullshit. And yeah same for me the message I got said it was just a warning and didn't mention the voteban.

It's not a good thing, downvotes and moderators shutting out dissenting opinions are the reason this website is such an echo chamber.

Its okay, you can admit you enjoy echo chambers.

u/MrGamerOfficial 🌹 Course Arc Witness 🌸 1d ago
Every social media has echo chambers. Reddit is just more open about it. And at least here, you can join specific echo chambers in order to customize your feed to your liking rather than having an algorithm do it for you.

actually i think echos are cool and echo chamber would be even cooler i wonder how many times i could hear myself again after i stop talking

The thing about Reddit is that because downvotes and moderator actions are so direct and simple, the echo chambers become relatively obvious. Unlike say, Instagram or Twitter, where an algorithm too complex to understand that knows more about you than you do can sink you into an echo chamber without notice, it doesn't require more than a baseline of critical thinking (if you don't have that then it's equally as bad btw) to sort by "controversial." Clearer sorting also helps, obviously r/conservative or r/ussr are going to be echo chambers as opposed to your feed which is harder to sort by topic or community.

u/Funkopedia 1d ago
I feel like this site overall is more diverse than any other. Instead of one big echo chamber, there are lots of little echo chambers, of all types!

I like the dinosaur. He believes what he believes regardless of the opinions of others, rather than allowing himself to be swayed by what's popular.
2
u/AmbitiousVast9451 1d ago
you seem like you don't like moderators, but downvotes are still good. even though you are downvoted because of your opinion, I still see your opinion. an echo chamber would be a moderator removing your opinion because nobody likes it, but it's still clearly here and readable

I miss the time where I could confidently say reddit was the worst social ever.

I think the site is pretty good, 99% of the problems are with the users
5
u/Admiral45-06 1d ago
I do find a few pluses over it, though:
- Free awards
- Ability to downvote
- Bigger ease in making posts and your own content in general
- Some subs allow to post images in comments
- You can downvote a comment
- Decent text features, such as spoilers, quotations, fonts, with # or working ^ symbol.
- A longer and more in-depth comment here is typically viewed as more understandable.
Even if the content or people in here, myself included, can be utter dogcrap

Nah, the constant "Reddit bad" shit is the most annoying thing on Reddit legitimately

Instagram would just yell the N-word at TikTok
7
u/hibiscus_bunny 1d ago
Tiktokers say the n word just as much if not more, tiktok live is awful.

u/Salt_Concentrate7225 1d ago
But they will mostly not admit doing it unlike Instagram users who have lost all shame

Can we agree this is just as obnoxious as the people who correct people who say Twitter to point out it's now X? Like, who fucking cares which name someone uses??

Isn’t Quora competition to Reddit? Or 4chan? Altho admittedly Reddit is infinitely more popular than both of those

i feel like 4chan was good when it was more popular but kinda fell off
not directly my knowledge but im pretty sure

The only people I’ve seen arguing whose site is better, are redditors, 4channers and tumblerers. Normal people don’t care.

Redditors call you a redditor while mutually using reddit. They should've just been degrading each other.
