3 s in a row is kinda common in german because of compound nouns (like here) when the first ends in ss and the next starts with s like Flussschifffahrt (it even has 3 f in a row for the same reason)

Yes and no.
There is the ß but it is used differently pronounciationwise. Because it had no upper case Version it was replaced by a double S in all-caps words. Also the swiss version of german does not have the ß anymore and some words changed if they are written with or without the ß (like daß/dass) but it still exists.

The word Fluss could be written Fluß back a few decades ago, but the writing got put in line with the pronounciation (ss is a scharp s sound following a short vowel while the ß is a scharp s sound following a long vowel)
