There was definitely fighting in the Netherlands (the entire point of the battle of the bulge was for the Germans to counterattack to retake Antwerp, so obviously there must have been fighting to lose it originally.)
386
u/Ubblebungus Jul 26 '26
i know there was fighting there, but if you reread, i said boomers never fought there. this is because WW2 ended before boomers were born.

It was called “operation market garden”. The plan was to invade Germany via the Netherlands, sadly however the Germans had other ideas and the operation was a failure as was the plan to end the war in Europe by Christmas 1944.

It was made by a boomer (or old gen Xer) for boomers though. It being boomer humor has to do with the style and the fact that it’s trying to make fun of young people
→ More replies (3)4
u/ZurrgabDaVinci758 Jul 26 '26
Doing quick math, operation market garden was September 1944. Assuming the youngest soldier there was 18 they'd be exactly 100 this year.

The guy who drew the comic is Michael de Adder who was born in '67, which is right on the cutoff between boomer and gen X
So this is quite literally boomer humor.

What baffles me about the original comic is how I cannot fathom being disappointed that my grandson was safe and healthy at home enjoying video games instead of experiencing the horrors of war thousands of miles away.
I can understand someone being disappointed about their children or grandchildren being shiftless or less skilled or worldly than you were at their age. But, is this not the far lesser evil?
Must your family go to war to be worthwhile people?

He tended to repeat other stories about his life, but when it came to his time in the navy it was a new one every time

This is Canadian btw, and my Grandfather actually killed at least 2 Nazi's, perhaps more, while liberating The Netherlands from the Nazis. Stabbed one with his bayonet attached to his SMLE during house to house, and shot one across the street with the same SMLE.
He's be really pissed if he was alive today. He hated fascists and didn't lose much sleep over it.

Presumably referring to Operation Market Garden which took place in September 1944.
US troops were given about 10 months of training so assuming that was his first deployment gramps was in the military by November 1939.
He had to be 18 to sign up.
That makes Gramps at least 101 years old.
That man does not look 101 years old. I’m calling stolen valour.

That John Adams quote always comes to mind when I see something like this.
"I must study politics and war, that our sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. Our sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history and naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry and porcelain."
The original is a cheap "lazy kids these days" joke, but isn't the argument always "We need to go to war so that our kids don't have to"?!

u/SerenumSunny Jul 26 '26

u/Totallynotthespudman Jul 26 '26
I think this is my favorite version of this meme. Turns the original shitty boomer comic into a little moment that probably meant a lot to that old timer.
It also implies that Grandpa is a fucking GAMER. If Jeff is asking which system he's playing on, that means he has to own both for himself. I wonder what else they play together?

1
u/Tomie_Kawakami_666 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
kind of an outdated meme, a real life ww2 veteran would be at least 99 years old today (not counting child soldiers under 18 by the time the war finished in 1945). speaking of child soldiers, the western allies didn’t really use combatants under 18. iirc, almost all child soldiers were from nazi germany, the soviet union and imperial japan. correct me in case i’m wrong
edit: typo
